15 or 21 Voigtlander on a M8?

A 24or25 is the perfect single wide lens for an M8. My CV 25 bought new because I needed a screw mount 25many years ago, is a pos on my M8. Bin candidate. So I am using two leica lenses ,21 & 28.

So if you are to choose a 15 which in my opinion is far to wide as a single wide. My choice would be the 21. Use the 28 mm frame lines built into the camera to see if it works with your style. Many pros used to select a 35/21 as a wide pair. But you would only be picking the extreme.

I've had some great results using a CV15 (coded as a WATE) on my M8. I have the 21mm finder, but I think I prefer to work without it. In my experience, the horizontal FOV of the 15 is about the same as that of my eyes, and I find it easier to keep the horizon straight (and so avoid the perspective distortion this lens can so easily produce if you're not careful) if I'm not composing in the external viewfinder

YMMV, of course, but I really enjoy using a lens that can see about the same as I can ;)

Hope that helps

Jim

Thanks for all your replies! I ended up going with the 21mm for a few reasons even though I know the 15 is capable of amazing things. 1) I am a street photographer first and foremost so I will never use a shoe mounted viewfinder. 2) The user reviews on B&H website were out of this world good. I've never seen a lens so lauded. 3) To my surprise the 21 was $200 cheaper (I thought they were both 600) so that was definitely the straw that broke the camels back I won't lie.

Looking forward to shooting wide, haven't done it in a while.

Thanks again and I'm still interested to hear people's opinions.

If you are so inclined, it would be nice to see you post some samples with your new lens in the M8 Photography Thread.

Thx

Richard

If you mean the Skopar 21/4 P it is a great lens indeed. Tiny size, plenty sharp at f/4.5 and on, very little flare, smooth bokeh, it would deserve a red dot. The metal frame of the viewfinder can be used comfortably to compose and the latter is not blocked by the barrel or the hood contrary to Leicas. For color shots with IR-cut filter i code the Skopar like the Super-Elmar 21 (110011) as it seems more immune to cyan shift than both Elmarit (000001) and Elmarit asph (011000) codings but the difference is not huge anyway. FWIW.

I'm luckily enough to have both of these lenses, picked up second hand at very reasonable prices.

As well as their pin sharp performance I love their compact size.

Wide angle lenses are a different discipline, here are a couple of my first efforts:

21mm

15mm

I prefer the 21mm, its not such an extreme ulta wide as the 15mm. Its amazing how close you need to work even with 21mm.

I've bought my used M8 with a bundle of lenses, among them the CV 21/4 in question. I originally had no intention to keep this lens, but its IQ is nothing less than convincing, so I keep it.

Be aware of the fact that the CV21/4 does not transmit to the finder <0.7m which is by design.

Other than that this is a most perfect lens for 1.33 crop at a most interesting price, very capable from full aperture on.

As for 15mm make sure you really need that angle. I have sold my super wide lens (a 12-24 Xenon for Pentax K mount on an APS-C Pentax Kx) after a few shots. I became aware of the fact that I was shooting at that angle for the effect, not for what the image required. But maybe that just tells you that I'm not having an eye for super wide angle...

I went with the 15 II myself. I finally found a 21 finder this week and no longer have to shoot blind!

Here are a couple of my shots done without the finder:

Rush Hour Madness

At f/5.6 and ISO 640 in very low light it's a pretty decent performer!

Down to the Line

Really love the ~20mm FOV this gives and interesting perspectives as a result.

I had a choice between the older screw mount and the M coupled version II and went with the latter since mounting an IR filter would be easier for my purposes.

The shots above were done without an IR filter but am now seeing the cyan corners and will have to go with cornerfix and code the lens eventually.

15CV has but one really sharp f stop, 5.6 or 8. At least mine and original reviews.

CV quality is iffy.

But if you need a 21 mm view on the M8, it is that or wate or Zeiss. The last two being so expensive you may just as well buy M9.

Prefer the CV 15 - sharper, more dramatic. Looked at the Zeiss and Leica 21, wasn't sure if they were worth the extra money. In hindsight, if you like that size lens, I'd recommend the Zeiss as a good price point between the two.

Below are shots from the 15. The 15 is as sharp as any lens on the M8. The 21 isn't quite there, although the viewing angle is calmer.

I love the 15mm on my M8. For architecture get a bubble level to go in the hot shoe, makes a huge difference in keeping the perspective correct.

I don't use a viewfinder, the entire camera viewfinder is a good approximation of the field of view.

Found à 21/4 CV yesterday at eBay. On its way - looking forward to find out if it is a keeper!
