Problem solved.

After 8 hours with the head on the pillow, decided to bin the 75 'Lux. Sticking with the 75 Apo for MM, M and M7, and 80 'Lux R for the M.

Ffordes were good about my change of mind when I called them at 0901hrs, and as I ordered late yesterday hadn't shipped the lens anyway.

So last time I looked, it's still there for the next hungry punter. It IS a good price, I'll say that. :)

Hmmm -maybe the wrong pillow ;).

Personally, I would have unloaded the 80 Summilux-R as it's much less versatile than the 75 Summilux-M. You will never be able to use it on two of your three cameras.

You could then decide about the 75 Summicron (or not!)

Perhaps try again tonight with another pillow :).

I agree with Markp at #183. I once used the Summilux 80 on a Canon 5d because it was a relative cheap solution for not being able to find the right 75lux at that moment. Having now a perfect 75lux on my MM or my M9, I find that the 75lux excels most in B&W.

I find the 75mm excellent in every regard. IMHO, the 75mm Summilux is destined to become a legend, in part due to Leica's current designer's disapproval while he has not proposed an alternative of his own design.

And let us not forget his lenses withdrawn from the market due to stupid designs.

I thought it already was around these parts ;).

I wish to point to Leica's guru of new lens design. At least one of his lenses have been withdrawn from production after many of his lenses had already been made and released to the market.

What I meant is that the direction of certain new designs of Leica lenses is interesting from the perspective of optics technology but it entirely ignores aesthetes and especially the concept of quality and minimalism.

No, for me, the pillow was right.

In my heart I knew that, in reality, I rarely use this focal length. OK, OK, I admit I have the 75 Apo and 80 R, but the 80 may also go to fund a 21 of some sort.

Probably one of those impulse moments we all have, seeing a rare-ish gem at a good price. Better it goes to a good home ;)

In that case one 75-80 is ample.

I thought you were planing on keeping the 75-M and 80-R.

Redirecting the 80's value to a 21 sounds very sensible.

:)

I think I read Puts writing that the 75 Summilux out performs the 80 Summilux.

It really is one of the best, ever, lenses. IMO. I'm not just talking Leica either, but all lenses. It can do highly impressionistic and it can do highly technical and then whatever you like between the two.

On top of that, in the two years I have owned it, it has almost doubled in value.

Yes, the value of these is climbing.

But some opine that the 80 R is also one the best lenses Leica ever produced. However, as MarkP has rightly pointed out, it can only be used on my M240 and not my MM or M7. Mind you, my M7 is ALC and lacks the pesky 75 frame.

Truth is, the 75 and 80 1.4s are both superb. They are both Mandler designs, released at about the same time and pretty much identical optically, closest focus distance excepted.

Anyhow, my indecision is now well and truly ended, as the GBP 1999 75 lux at Ffordes has now gone to another owner.....

I'm sure you've made the right decision today, but if you change your mind in a few month or years there will be a few 'I told you so' comments ;)

I have bought this lens, I've been looking for a 75 lux since parting with the Nocti 0.95 a few months ago, it left such a gap. And not feeling confident about buying on ebay,

and of course having some budget restrictions, this one seemed very attractive when it popped back on to the market last Saturday.

jcraf, forgive me for "taking" your lens but rest assured that it will have the very best of good homes! :) I am just hoping that it is in okay condition and problem free,

it being the first non brand new lens I've ever purchased I'm a little concerned,

so....looking forward to it's arrival with great anticipation and hope.

Glad it's gone to a good home ;)

If it helps I've bought and sold a number of second hand lenses and now own 12 Leica lenses, they are all second hand, all in lovely condition and all perfect optically, a few have been serviced by Malcolm Talylor since purchase and I couldn't be happier :)

I really wouldn't worry

Thank you so much for your reassuring words, it is going to take about a week of travel for the lens to reach me (in Australia).....I won't be thinking of much else until it arrives!
