Leica customer service

Wow, am I impressed!

I recently purchased a new M8 from a dealer who just never sold it. It also came with a warranty so I filled out the registration card and mailed it in. Well when you purchase the M8, Leica gives to 2 IR/Cut filters for free. Who would not want free Leica filters.

I found the info online and filled out the registration necessary to get the filters, only to receive an email from Leica in Germany saying wait a minute you need to send us the registration for the camera first.

I explained that I had already mailed in the registration and hoped they would send the filters. Nothing happened for 2 weeks.

Here is where it gets interesting and I understand Leica needs to check it out first, I would too.

I emailed Birgitta Mielke with Leica Camera AG Customer Care -Software Support in Solms, German on Wednesday just asking him if they had located my registration information and the filters arrived overnight via FedEx from Germany on Friday.

Now that is great customer service.

Leica does customer service they way it should be done and their staff needs to be commended for it. I remain grateful to be treated so well!

Thank you Leica!

You got the free filters you were entitled to, after a few weeks and after having to chase them a couple of times. Personally I wouldn't call that great customer service at all!

Mmm, steady on. I think it was pretty good.

He sent the registration documents by post form the USA to Germany so it would take some time for them to arrive. I get airmail letters from the USA that take over a week to reach Scotland. I sent a letter to Germany recently that took over a week to arrive.

When I sent off for my free filters I'm sure they took at least a fortnight to arrive.

How many more firms would honour a freebie deal for a model that's been discontinued now for - what is it . . . two years or more?

So great customer service from Fedex and the post service then!

Leica offer free filters for any new M8, they've never stated a deadline AFAIK. One can still find new Leica R8's and M6's out there, so there are likely a number of new M8's still sitting on dealers shelves too.

Sorry, but I dont see how this is 'great' customer service, that's all. It's just what one should expect. But well done to those postal services for speedy delivery.

James I think you are being a bit tough on Customer Service there.

I reall that one problem that Leica Camera encountered with this free filter supply originally is that some individuals guessed serial numbers (for cameras that they did not own) in order to fraudulently obtain the filters. The system was changed for the later Adobe Lightroom licence.

So it is reasonable for them to confirm that you had registered a camera before sending the filters. Registering the camera on-line worked just fine for me at that time with no warranty card physically posted to them at all and of course that saves waiting for postal mail to arrive (in this case transiting from Nebraska to Solms). Not surprising that would cause some delay.

From memory, my filters were delivered (and by FEDEX) to Australia in about a week/10 days after applying on-line following camera registration.

Incidentally, last year I bought a new/old stock lens here and later sent it for servicing for stiff focus movement via the Australian distributor. Their repair agency queried the warranty coverage and Solms initially responded to them that it was not covered. The lens proved to actually be five year old production and I had also had the flange coded by a third party after purchase. The distributor told me that they were unable to assist further (the bill was to be more than $300). I emailed customer service and explained, also sending a copy of the purchase invoice (that they may not have seen via the agent's query to them). I received a prompt, courteous reply apologising for the confusion and the service was performed for free and to perfection.

Then I was silly enough to sell the lens on later  and now want to get another.
