andalus Posted January 29, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted January 29, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) My son, 26, is working in Singapore and headed to medical school next year. He's been using a Canon G10 but is becoming very interested in photography and currently lusts after the upcoming Canon 5D Mark III, assuming I don't die soon and he inherits my M9. In any case, he says in prosperous Singapore everyone seems to be walking around with fancy cameras and he's spotted quite many Leica users there. Not just the occasional Leicaphile, but many of them. I guess the Leica store there is doling quite well.

ejd Posted January 30, 2012 Share #3 Â Posted January 30, 2012 There is a very friendly and fun group of young Leica and rangefinder photographers and enthusiasts in Singapore. I spent three months there early 2011 and they were very welcoming, and great company. They are members of the rangefinder group on ClubSNAP Photography Forums - The Front Page. Â All the best, John
fWord Posted January 30, 2012 Share #4 Â Posted January 30, 2012 Singapore is a country that I miss, especially for the food. I grew up there and have been a member at the Clubsnap forums for a number of years. There are a fair number of lucky kids on the street with nice cameras and lenses and a lot of them are part of that forum. They hold gatherings, outings and photoshoots from time to time. Â The owner of a camera store once told me that some of these 'students' think nothing about spending lots of money for a top end camera...in most cases its doubtful that it's even their own savings, and parents probably have given them the money to buy these toys. My parents never believed in that, so if your son is trying to get you to hand over the money and buy him a new 5D MKII, might I suggest that you promptly refuse. Anyway, this guy jokes that if a buyer claims he/ she is a 'student', then he refuses to do a discount and actually charges more. Because these 'students' usually come from very affluent families with doting parents. Â That said, the prices of camera gear in Singapore are actually quite reasonable, less expensive than I've seen over here in Australia. The Clubsnap forums should be able to give you a good idea of which camera stores are reliable, and if you can find a knowledgeable local friend to tag along, that might also be helpful. Alternatively, if you're confident buying second hand, look at the Clubsnap classifieds. I've bought a lot of stuff off there in the past, and always had a nice long chat with the seller after the deal. It's not all about the trade as all of us are usually happy to talk about the hobby itself. Â The Singapore skyline is changing by the minute, and considering that it's been years since being there, surely it must be pretty different by now. I do look forward to my upcoming trip in April this year. There's just something about the Singapore food that can't be beat. And I'd be taking the camera to the street too, to photograph the everchanging skyline and streetscape.
Guest stanjan0 Posted January 30, 2012 Share #5 Â Posted January 30, 2012 I was in Singapore during a cruise this past November and visited several camera stores just as I did previously in Hong Kong and guess what they all had brand new Leica 90MM f/2 lens for sale. however they wanted between $1000 to $2000 US dollars more, so I didn't buy one and am still waiting for that lens from B&W in NYC and its fully paid for. So I ask why do they have them and B&W doesn't.
stunsworth Posted January 30, 2012 Share #6 Â Posted January 30, 2012 So I ask why do they have them and B&W doesn't. Â It's possible that they are receiving stock and allocating stock to people like yourself on a waiting list, where as there's no such waiting list for the store in Singapore. Guest stanjan0 Posted January 30, 2012 Share #8 Â Posted January 30, 2012 Erik, yes thats the NYC store let me tell you what happened, in early July 2011 B&H (NYC) said they expect a supply of the Leica 90MM f/2 and if you want one send in the money, so I did. A few days later I received a message that the message that they expect the imminent arrival was a mistake that was a few days short of 7 months ago. Thay still have my money because I thought they would have had one by now.
Erik Gunst Lund Posted January 30, 2012 Share #9 Â Posted January 30, 2012 Wow, I would definitely writhe B&H customer service and ask for an update on the situation. I have only very good encounters with B&H...
Guest stanjan0 Posted January 30, 2012 Share #10 Â Posted January 30, 2012 Erik, prior to this incident I too had only good things to say about B&H, I have bought a ton of lens, and other equipment from them in the past, thats why I so readily sent them the money when they asked for it. To be fair they have offered to return my monies to me but, I refused fearing I'd loose my place in line when they get some Leica 90MM f/2 lens. fWord Posted January 31, 2012 Share #13  Posted January 31, 2012 I'm getting virus warnings on these pages.Pete  That's surprising, but given I don't run the website, best advise is to give it a miss if there's any doubt at all. But I've been at those forums for a number of years now and had no issues to date. If anybody else is experiencing the same issues however, let me know and I'll write them on the issue.
