sjefjans Posted January 29, 2012 Share #1 Posted January 29, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I noticed that my Leica R3 has a light leak around the film canister window. So I searched the web and found a site by kameradoktor in Germany where light seals are offered. Does any one has experience with this person? Also, I saw that the film pressure plate is dirty. Probably from seal particles. Can I clean that with acetone?

spydrxx Posted January 29, 2012 Share #2 Posted January 29, 2012 I would strongly advise against using acetone in or on a camera part. If you must use a chemical, try propanol (propyl alcohol, AKA rubbing alcohol-not the scented type though).
Stealth3kpl Posted January 29, 2012 Share #3 Posted January 29, 2012 I got mine from this guy for an OM1 and OM2. They were fine. He directed me to his web page for comprehensive How To guidance. Keep acetone away from your camera. Isopropyl alcohol is cheap from Amazon. This should be kept away from your focusing screen unless you want to buy a new one. Good luck! TomB_tx Posted January 29, 2012 Share #5 Posted January 29, 2012 Sounds like the OP is referring to the foam rectangle seal around the film-type reminder window in the back. Neither of the kits suggested seem to include that part. I had taped over the window on my R4 for this reason, but finally sent it to Jon Goodman, who makes seal kits. He made a new seal for it, and planned to offer it in his seal kit for the R series. If you do a Google search you should be able to find his email address, as he no longer sells on eBay. earleygallery Posted January 29, 2012 Share #6 Posted January 29, 2012 If you just need the film window foam, Leica might be able to supply it to you directly if you ask their service dept., otherwise you can get a foam seal kit and make up a part. Clean the pressure plate with a lens cloth.
tobey bilek Posted January 29, 2012 Share #7 Posted January 29, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Foam deteriorates. Leica will furnish new foam cut to size including the window . Realize if the rest of the foam is gone if the window foam is gooey, swing back light seals and hinge area. They all need to be redone. Take a round tooth pick, cut in half diagonally, and scrape off the old junk from the door and hinge areas. Clean up with MEK OUTSIDE. It is the best solvent, however I would not use any solvent around the window. You could craze the plastic or loesen the cement that holds it in place. If you are brave, use black yarn instead of foam and you will never need to redo it. Send a PM and I will look up the glue. All the repair people use it. Micro Tools sells self adhesive foam sheets in 1,2,&3 mm thicknesses. Cut the length and width you need with a razor knife. If you are skilled enough to wet the foam and apply it, you are skilled enough to cut it too.
sjefjans Posted January 30, 2012 Author Share #8 Posted January 30, 2012 ...If you are brave, use black yarn instead of foam and you will never need to redo it. What's black yarn? Some kind of cotton/wool? Interesting information Tobey. Thanks for that.
sjefjans Posted January 31, 2012 Author Share #9 Posted January 31, 2012 Does any of you know what the thickness of the canister light seal should be? 3mm?
Carl E Posted January 31, 2012 Share #10 Posted January 31, 2012 Jon Goodman (JGood21967@aol.com) supplies a light seal material for the film door that does not require glue. I have used this material on many of my vintage cameras and I can recommend it.

I have used this material on many of my vintage cameras and I can recommend it. I am in touch with John. But it seems he will have to cut the seal for the canister window on special notice. Also I found a company in Germany that provides ready cut sealings for the R3 but also without the canister window seal. Besides all that I found the site of Micro Tools as mentioned before by Tobey and they offer a set of the same foam material (self adhesive) to be cut by oneself. That's a challenge I like. I am quite handy with cutting tools, so ....
