chouhsin Posted February 23, 2007 Share #1  Posted February 23, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am just another unfortunate Leica D2 user who had his beloved camera sent to Germany for sensor repair.  It happened exactly the samething discribed here a while ago : image goes wierd, back background with color stripes, and then all of a sudden, everything goes black, no more image, completly dead!  Yet, much more miserable, I called for more information today and they said Leica will send me a 760€ innvoice! It's like saying, "760€ or your 1600€ camera in the trash can".  While Leica had clearly stated the sensor exchange will be in their charge, I really don't understand why they still want to charge me on this.  Leica has really ruined their reputation with all those quality problems lately. And they surely lost me as a client......    Hsin
stuny Posted February 23, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted February 23, 2007 Hsin - Â I bought my D2 in March of 2004 and delivered it to Leica in New Jersey on 10 January for sensor replacement. It was covered by warranty and I had the camera back between four and five weeks later (which includes trans-Atlantc shipping). I suggest you cite reports such as this to Leica and ask them why you are being treated differently.
chouhsin Posted February 23, 2007 Author Share #3 Â Posted February 23, 2007 Hello Stuart, Â What was the symptom of your D2? Did it died totally? Or could you still view the image, but a failed-sensor image? Â I remember that mine heated a bit, and the battery empty sign showed up before it gone totally black. (short circuit that emptied the battery?) Â Many thanks in advance. Â Â Hsin
marknorton Posted February 23, 2007 Share #4  Posted February 23, 2007 What is your €760 buying you? What work are they doing? DId you ask Leica about this extended customer service for sensor failure in the D2?  Leica Camera AG - Extended customer service for LEICA DIGILUX 2  I understood that the sensor has been shown to fail early due to short cuts in the manufacturing process at Sony. chouhsin Posted February 23, 2007 Author Share #5 Â Posted February 23, 2007 Mark, Â I did join the extended customer service note. Also, my camera was under a 3 year guarantee (pan-asian guatantee). Â I haven't really received the innvoice yet. I called my local store and they told me on the phone the bad news. And they are not able to tell me the detail. I have to wait to see what's listed as work. This will be a very difficult weekend I think. Â Â Â Hsin
spylaw4 Posted February 23, 2007 Share #6  Posted February 23, 2007 Sorry to hear this news Hsin. Could this charge be related to your pan-asian guarantee I wonder? I do hope that you get yours covered by the extended sensor guarantee as at £542 it's arguably getting close to the write-off cost in relation to 2nd hand prices. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my D2 doesn't go the same way!
chouhsin Posted February 23, 2007 Author Share #7  Posted February 23, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) To all,  If you were I, if Leica really refuse to take in charge of the repair. Would you spend another 760€?  I am getting more and more disappointed every second.   Hsin
audidudi Posted February 23, 2007 Share #8  Posted February 23, 2007 If you were I, if Leica really refuse to take in charge of the repair. Would you spend another 760€?  If you were happy with its performance and aren't looking for an excuse to buy the new camera of your dreams, then why not? Of course, you can likely buy a used one for less (although you then have the potential for a similar failure occuring ... sometimes it's better to ride the horse you have) and you can certainly buy a used Panasonic LC-1 for much less... MP3 Posted February 23, 2007 Share #9  Posted February 23, 2007 To all, If you were I, if Leica really refuse to take in charge of the repair. Would you spend another 760€?  I am getting more and more disappointed every second.   Hsin  Hi Hsin  I own a D2 as well. Bought mine in Hong Kong in Oct 2004. Though everything is fine right now, I'm expecting to ship it back to Leica for a sensor replacement by the end of Sep (end of 3yr Pan-Asia warranty).  My opinion to your dilemma,,, if Leica insist on the Euro 760, I will skip the repairance and save a bit more on a R-D1s and some used M lenses. You will soon begin to enjoy a real Leica M shooting experience, my 2 cents.  Best Matthew
dugby Posted February 23, 2007 Share #10 Â Posted February 23, 2007 Hsin, sorry to read your thread. Something seems amiss here. Â From the Leica News webpage, i would have thought your sensor would be covered by the Extended Warranty offer....... unless there is more damage beyond the immediate sensor issue? earleygallery Posted February 23, 2007 Share #11 Â Posted February 23, 2007 Hsin, Â My understanding (though only from what I've heard and read) is that the sensor replacement is free. Â You say that the shop has told you about an invoice, maybe they are mistaken? I would contact Leica directly and ask them firstly if it is correct and then for a breakdown of the charges to show exactly what they intend doing. Â Surely they would have to provide an estimate and get your authority to proceed in any case? Â I really think that your dealer has given you duff information here. Riley Posted February 23, 2007 Share #12  Posted February 23, 2007 I agree with James something is wrong here there are no exemptions for Leica in this they dont care who you are or where you are from  if its a sensor failure they offer to repair for free you need to check the facts of the matter and seek alternate advice from Leica
chouhsin Posted February 23, 2007 Author Share #13  Posted February 23, 2007 So I called my local store again to get more detail, here's what they said :  90€ for an aparature group, 380€ for a PPL circuit (yikes), 157€ for repairing work + Tax = 760€  Why does Leica charge me while my guarantee is still good, they do not know. Their technicien will talk to Leicas' next week and try to get a reasonable explication.  What I don't understand is, how could the apareture group be cooked? And what the h*ll is that PPL circuit? Why isn't the sensor on the list?   Hsin
Riley Posted February 23, 2007 Share #14  Posted February 23, 2007 sounds like its the store thats charging you not Leica pick up the telephone and talk to Leica or email them from their site  lets see if there is a difference BTW: who is the store ? are they a Leica agent ? chouhsin Posted February 23, 2007 Author Share #15 Â Posted February 23, 2007 It's the Leica's official reparing store in Paris. They are supposed to be honest people. (although I don't really trust French) Â The thing is that I didn't note my serial number so I can't call Leica for more details. Stupid me. Riley Posted February 23, 2007 Share #16  Posted February 23, 2007 no problem refuse to pay get your camera back  i just checked the Leica offer for sensor repair is still valid  Leica Camera AG - Extended customer service for LEICA DIGILUX 2  12/13/2006  Leica Camera AG is offering all owners of the LEICA DIGILUX 2 a customer service free of charge even beyond the stated warranty period. Specifically, this refers to exchanging the digital camera's sensor in the case of a rarely occurring malfunction. Leica Camera AG has opted for this extended warranty due to the fact that there have been a few reports of this malfunction caused by faulty manufacturing which also affects some other makes' cameras. chouhsin Posted February 26, 2007 Author Share #17 Â Posted February 26, 2007 So I insisted. I complained like a French. I pointed out that this is not my fault and should Leica charge me on the reparing, I would be VERY disappointed.... Â And guess what? They called me that evening and told me they negociated with Leica Germany. There won't be any charge. Â Thank you all for supporting me on this.
