This is terribly ambiguous. I'm surprised their marketing people allowed this ad." Film is dead; so are we" is not the message they are trying to send. I hope they change this ad.

Actually, it might be quite effective! There is a trend of some kind of reverse-psychology. In one of the better outdoor sports magazines (forgot name, was in doc's office) the ad begins at the top on old-school ways of making, for example, hand-made shelters. It is a genuine article and accurate. Then just below it in large letters is "DON'T BE THAT GUY" and continues with an advert for its lightweight pop-open tents.

Also in one of my wife's catalog is an advert for a shoe that says, "DO NOT BUY THIS SHOE!" then proceeds with amusing reasons why it's a silly thought not to.

I'd say you're probably right. Certainly made me take note of the ad.

The morons at Kodak cut 8x10 TXP to a special order only the same day they launched this film.

So, are they really tired of hearing film is dead?

They do more to kill the film market than anyone else.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record,

Great products, dumb ass management team!

Kodak employes full time "listeners".

So why not full time posters too?

Fire the CEO and his team.

They have done nothing right and are destroying a great America firm.

Now that Kodak has given me heart burn...off to the darkroom to scan some film.

I don't get it... Why are you out trolling all the forums with this? Is this what Kodak has come to? Pushing movie film onto 35mm shooters that's only available in 400' rolls?

Hello Everybody,

Don't forget movie films comes w/ an additional anti-haltion backing that must be mechanically separated from the back of the film stock in order for processing to be done properly. During the 1970's some respooled movie film was was sold which was developed in specialized facilities by the respoolers.

Movie films cannot simply be respooled & sent thru standardly available C-41 processing.

Best Regards,

Michael.

These people use a lot of cinefilm in their work - you can search their blog if you're interested in seeing how amazingly well it works.

In fairness to the Kodak management what is causing the choices to contract - unlike yourself I dont think anyone is killing off film as a generic choice - is the market. Film is selling in far smaller numbers than a decade ago. I imagine many 10x8 users have migrated to MF digital, hence the reason you can no longer buy the film you mentioned off the shelf.

This rationalisation has been in progress for several years - how easy is it to buy 220 film for example?

I think the market has shrunk so much that it has become to small for giant multinationals. Especially now that Kodak's last mainstay, the movie industry is going digital. The time has come for film users to turn to the smaller niche companies.

How about a sticky in the film forum of Ma and Pa film companies?

Don't forget mail order - Rollei, Fomapan, etc.

Depending on where you live, Freestyle Photo is a great resource (and where I get all my film and supplies from).

I totally overlooked that. The process is ECN-2 and if one were to spool some and send it to the local C41 processor, he might not only ruin the film, but contaminate the processing machine. I can't think of a better way to ruin a customer relationship.

That 70's re-spooled film was specially processed to negative or slides and I recall it had about the worst archival quality ever. It was an inter-neg, after all.

I am always concerned about international shipping for film. So I look only locally, but where I live, I cannot even find Tri-X.

That is a downright shame. Chendu is something of an art center of China, is it not? Can you order it from Hong Kong?

Hong Kong is still considered overseas, I have had shops refuse to ship to me because, they did not have the proper permit. I had a friend order some from Beijing, but the Chinese version of ebay (Taobao) is only in chinese, I am a bit handicapped. I always prefer to shop local, that way I can develop a relationship with the shopkeeper.

Thats not to say there is not film here, there are film shops on every other block, but Pro quality film is sold only in a few shops, and for some reason they only stock HP5...

Yes, Chengdu is really quite lovely, and starting next month is the spring festival, which is amazing.

I can only draw parallels, however, I have experienced numerous spinoffs of businesses that are not meeting the corporate targets (margins, revenue, return on invested capital etc), or not complementing the portfolio (little contribution to risk spreading), only to be sold to smaller companies much better positioned to run these spun off businesses (and DO run them very successfully). The more (big) companies step out, the more interesting the opportunities for smaller companies become. The market is not "dead", it is simply too small (or growth potential is too small) to keep the giants interested.

I'm quite optomistic about film.
