Advertisement Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 Hi jpattison, Take a look here OK, time to stop this madness.... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
IkarusJohn Posted December 11, 2011 Share #2 Posted December 11, 2011 USD 2,500 just for the box I can understand people wanting boxes and documentation (I think, though it seems daft to me), but this box will have a serial number on it, won't it? There's only one lens it will go with ... or did they only start putting numbers on boxes relatively recently?
farnz Posted December 11, 2011 Share #3 Posted December 11, 2011 Hmm ... I think I'd pass on that anyway since the seller only has 97.5% positive feedback. Irrespective of whether the price is high or low I wouldn't risk that sort of money without 100% feedback. Pete.
adan Posted December 11, 2011 Share #4 Posted December 11, 2011 Jeez, it's just a buy-it-now price. Not a minimum bid. Could have been $100,000 for all that means. The seller has a "make offer" option - so offer $1.00. And yes, a serial number is on the box (22-something-or-other)
kokoshawnuff Posted December 11, 2011 Share #5 Posted December 11, 2011 I saw a NIB 35 Lux fle somewhere for $11,500 and numerous 50 lux asph for over $6000. The modern leica world is entrenched with merciless (and often unscrupulous) sellers supported by ignorant and impatient buyers. Like others I would avoid a small scale ebay seller with 3 negative feedbacks like the plague...
spylaw4 Posted December 12, 2011 Share #6 Posted December 12, 2011 Given that Noctiluxes 1.2 are fetching an awful lot of money (Why?) and that most do not seem to have any box (even a lens hood for one will fetch very serious money), I would expect a box to cost a lot even if it doesn't match the number - but $2500 is taking the p**s! jaapv Posted December 12, 2011 Share #7 Posted December 12, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) They fetch a lot of money because: They are pretty rare Were bl%%%y expensive to start with Use two handground asphericals Are thus collectors' items. With box a lens is worth far more. This is probably more than the price difference. Provided it is the original box...
NZDavid Posted December 12, 2011 Share #8 Posted December 12, 2011 Why is it worth far more with the box? Guess it is the same as antiques. Worth more no matter what it is with original accessories, documentation, and provenance. Still crazy though. If the lens is selling without the box, perhaps one could ask for a $2500 discount? gyoung Posted December 12, 2011 Share #12 Posted December 12, 2011 Collecting and collectors' prices defy rational explanations...In any field. I don't mind too much when lenses which have been superceded by 'better' versions become collectors items at high prices, what saddens me is when lenses which are desireable for use become expensive simply because they didn't make many, and thus gather dust on shelves rather than get used for picture taking, eg the last and best screw thread lenses, 35 Summaron 2.8 and the 35 &50 (rigid) Summicrons which fetch far more than their M mount equivalents. Fortunately there are other alternatives, Voigtlander in particular, but while they are good, they are not providing quite the Leica images we love. Perhaps the next project for such as Leitax? replacement mounts to convert M to L39? Gerry

Gerry The Noctilux 1.2 was not superseded by the 1.0 because it was "better". Leica replaced the lens because the aphericals were exceedingly expensive to grind with only a small percentage being within tolerance. As soon as the Leica Glass Laboratory managed to smelt glass that made it possible to design a new version they did so. Of course going from 1.2 to 1.0, although of little practical impact, did a lot for Leica's prestige.
gyoung Posted December 12, 2011 Share #15 Posted December 12, 2011 I would be happy to adapt a screw thread 35 Summicron to M if I could get such a lens G.
StephenPatterson Posted December 12, 2011 Share #16 Posted December 12, 2011 wow.. what kind of box that is? A rare box... Sure I think this is silly, but this guy knows that somebody who is selling a 50/1.2 Noctilux will get more money by including an original box. Of course the buyer of the lens will think he is getting THE original box, and make assumptions that this lens was only driven by a little old lady on Sundays, but... The "grouping" of original Leica accessories around cameras and lenses seems to be a very big business. As PT once said, there's one born every minute.
