Zudem haben Lokomotiven eine lange Lebensdauer und man sieht dadurch mehrere Generationen an Bauarten auf den Schienen, was dann eine höhere Vielfalt vermuten läßt, als tatsächlich vorhanden ist. Das kommt selten vor. In Europa haben wir weitgehend die Regelspur mit 1435 mm. Die haben wir den Erfindern der ganzen Sache, den Briten, zu verdanken. Da es immer technische Vorläufer gibt, entspricht das der Spurweite der römischen Straßen und der dazu passenden Pferdefuhrwerke.
