brijnbout Posted January 11, 2012 Author Share #23 Posted January 11, 2012 Thanks for the advise. I sent the pictures to Will but according to him the lens is total loss, too expensive to repair. I could sell it for spare parts (the glass looks great), I got an offer for 50 euro only. Or I could experiment with it. Glue it together and see what happens. I'm afraid It will cost me at least 40 euro to send it to Solms only to hear that it will cost me a fortune to repair it. regards, Bart Rijnbout
normclarke Posted January 11, 2012 Share #24 Posted January 11, 2012 I'm sure plenty of experimentor's like me would offer you a reasonable price for this piece. The trick would be to strip it to base components and work from there. I have repaired many items that look a write off with varying success, this looks a good challenge to attempt. Best, normclarke. Guest Holy Moly Posted January 11, 2012 Share #25 Posted January 11, 2012 Whe it's possible to get an unbroken plastic ring as a sample a friend of mine would be able to make it from alumnium, PTFE, brass.. etc...... SJP Posted January 17, 2012 Share #26 Posted January 17, 2012 It looks like a clean brittle fracture to me which should be repairable via the use of a suitable glue. It really depends on what type of plastic it is. Also it is not going to be something for the inexperienced. Did you try contacting Leica? Maybe they have spare parts on the shelf. wattsy Posted January 17, 2012 Share #27 Posted January 17, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Did you try contacting Leica? Maybe they have spare parts on the shelf. I agree that it wouldn't hurt to ask Solms. Maybe email them the photo to get an opinion as to whether it is worth sending in for a proper (€40) evaluation? These lenses now fetch £1000+ so there is a fair bit of leeway in terms of repair cost before it is uneconomical to do so. Seems a shame for such a fine lens to be sold as €50 parts. mikebidwell Posted January 19, 2012 Share #30 Posted January 19, 2012 PM me if you are interested in selling your lens. 50 euro is a ridiculous offer, by the way. Regards, K. I really can't understand why you seem so reluctant to ask Solms at least for an indication as to if they can repair your lens and a guide price for doing it. You've got images of the damage so all you have to do is send them an e-mail. Whats the harm in doing that ???
Jaybob Posted January 19, 2012 Share #31 Posted January 19, 2012 How's your homeowners insurance? If you're not a professional photographer, perhaps the lens is covered for full replacement cost, especially if you have a noted repairman say the thing's broken beyond economical repair. Turn it in for repair. Past practice has been if no repair is possible, you get a deal on current replacement item. The used market is booming with lenses of that ilk for $1400 to $2000. If new is the only way you'll go, and the stated Solms policy is a deal on a replacement, it's not ALL bad. Especially if there's insurance money to spend. Although on first glance, that picture is horrifying. Jay
brijnbout Posted January 31, 2012 Author Share #32 Posted January 31, 2012 Just to let you all know, Leica Solms finally answered my mail. A repair of the lens is possible, the costs will be around 450 euro. The lenses need to be fitted new and then it needs new calibration. Thanks all for your thoughts. regards, Bart Bart Rijnbout | Photography |
earleygallery Posted January 31, 2012 Share #33 Posted January 31, 2012 So, 50 for scrap plus 450 for a factory repair = 500, and that's not economical?....... I take it that your're going ahead, if not first dibs and I'll send you the 50euros plus postage!!
iphoenix Posted January 31, 2012 Share #34 Posted January 31, 2012 How's your homeowners insurance? Definitely check your household contents insurance. Many policies do cover such damage repairs, even when the item is damaged away from the house. If you were on a trip, check your travel insurance. What Leica still offers in today's throw away economy is stunning, kudos to them. Oh and if you are not taking Leica's offer, I am offering you €100! K. Till now they inform me quickly by email and I hope to see my lens soon. Regards, Bart Bart Rijnbout | Photography |
