And have noticed that the aperture ring is off centre, only after buying it. Functions good. Though this occurrence is odd. Anyone experieced this ? If bought from a dealer, convince him to send it to LEICA for correction. In case it works o. k. and you can live with it use it. luigi bertolotti Posted November 27, 2011 Share #3 Posted November 27, 2011 Not so uncommon on some old lenses... nothing bad if globally all the apertures are fine: it can be both an "original" situation (expecially in the very first batches of some "new - new version" lenses of those times), or the consequence of a CLA with disassembly of the lens. I have a very first Summilux 35 and a Summarit 1,5 with such little mispositioning... and keep them as they are... Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
doubice Posted November 27, 2011 Share #4 Posted November 27, 2011 I think that the biggest problem is that the lens is completely misengraved! If I remember, the version 2 'cron 35 has a retainig / tightening ring inside the rear lens mount. adan Posted November 27, 2011 Share #5 Posted November 27, 2011 Actually, that is a normal modification for the version 2 lens. The reason is the semaphore "tab" or lever used to operate the skinny aperture ring. It overlaps and interferes with the focusing tab near infinity if the aperture is properly centered and the lens is set to f/2. So the aperture ring and index are canted out of the way in some units (not sure if this was a change introduced during the factory run, or an after-market modification commissioned by frustrated photojournalists). I'm looking at the illustration for this lens in Dennis Laney's Leica Collectors Guide - it is identical to the OP's lens - the aperture index mark is out past the f/16 DoF mark, towards the left (viewfinder) side. Here's a snap of the v.2 with centered aperture ring, and you can see that its tab gets very close to the focus tab even at f/5.6 - easy to nudge the tab and bollux your exposure when focusing under pressure. http://www.kenrockwell.com/leica/images/35mm-f2-1970/D3S_4243-1200.jpg Within 4 years, Leica redesigned the mount for the third version, to get rid of the aperture tab altogether. If it was, I´am quite sure I would remember. The lens is gone, it fell into Lake Mulungushi, then (almost) still Northern Rhodesia. A long, long time ago. jaapv Posted November 28, 2011 Share #10 Posted November 28, 2011 Iirc, the optical cell could be loosened quite simply by the user by unscrewing the slotted ring around the rear element barrel. The replacement looked exactly like #2, no tab, both where from Canada. Never liked to be without a SUMMICRON 35, on M2/ M4. In case these are all your personal lenses, you have quite a few treasures around your place ...
