With my D2 back from its vacation in Solms I took #s2 through 5 inside the main hall of Grand Central terminal. It’s nice to have a smaller camera back (the DMR is too large for daily travel in my briefcase). The replacement FX01 will be back soon, too. The first shot is from the summer of 2005, also D2. Grand Central Terminal (some say “station” but terminal is correct) is in the heart of the city, and is where one catches trains going north. You can see my office window in the background of #1 (25th floor, 5th from the right).

Stuart - one of my favorite buildings anywhere...the ceiling in no's 2 and 4 is beautiful, with the clouds and stars. Tho I'm afraid my wife (a native NYer) has never forgiven the Pan Am building! Thanx for showing.

enjoyed seeing your photographs of this grand building

one of the great NY tragedies was the loss of Penn Station, which I remember from my childhood, with its replacement being a monstrosity, IMHO

thankfully Grand Central Station remains & is a truly worthy portal for this great city ...thanks for sharing these photographs of a favorite place ...good to know your camera made it back safe & sound

Sam - Thank you. I still refer to it as the Pan Am building. Only newcomers miss the reference.

Arthur - Thank you. I too miss the old Penn Station, and it looks as though the old post office across 8th Avenue may go away, too. You might recall that this is the building on which the USPS motto is carved ("Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow, nor gloom of night shall stay these couriers from their appointed rounds", or something like that).

 

Ed - Thank you. I guess the jpeg quality is about the same since you can't tell that I'm wearing a nude color body suit. actually, it never struck me that the D2 might be even better. since the beginning with this camera (next month is three years) I've been amazed at the quality ofthe jpegs, as has been my photo finisher.

 

Charlie - Thank you. It is surprisingly clean. Think of it as a really huge operating theater that is missing a sterile field.

 

Brian - Thank you. #2 is at 28mm, wide open, and I would guess about 1/25 second. The other interiors are at 90mm, wide open and between 1/8 and 1/15, all handheld, which this camera allows us to do very well.

Thank you. Yes that is sunlight, facing east mid morning, after the rush hour. The sun's direction is one of the two reasons I shot from the western edge of the main hall. The other reason is that where I wanted to shoot from on the eastern wall I could not get to because of a restaurant using the space.
