summicron-r 50/2 and 50/1.4 ???

I would think that the D700 can negate the 1 stop advantage of the Summilux over the Summicron. So you are left with a lens that is larger, weighs about twice as much, is more expensive and can give you a shallower depth of field. The 50/2, designed by Walter Mandler, is a great lens in both R and M mounts.

There are also 3 versions of the 50 1.4. The first two have the same optical design (later one has built-on hood and takes 55mm filters). The 3rd version was much improved optically and takes 60mm filters. It is quite hard to find.

I have both the Summicron-R and (earlier version) Summilux-R, and while the 1.4 is of benefit in low light on film (lower ISO), I'd agree the 2.0 is a more practical lens. With Digital especially the speed advantage is small.
