GOT IT!

Two days ago I and my dealer were musing about when the revamped Super-Elmar 21mm might heave into view. We agreed that Sweden is not very high up on the Leica totem pole, and we were resigned to a date well into next year.

And today he phoned and told me that the lens and the finder had arrived! I did actually have lunch before I went downtown and collected the gear. It is a compact and lovely lens, it is tack sharp in the right place, i.e. where I focus it, and the new style finder is a great improvement on the old plastic style.

My dealer is Schönherrs Foto, Stockholm. And my manufacturer is Leica Camera AG.

I have read comment about the new, improved 21mm viewfinder - can anybody shed some light on this one?

I have recently acquired a much nicer 21mm lens, as the 21 Elmar ;-) … and am interested in different 21mm viewfinder options.

I do have the Leica Universal Frankenfinder, which is brilliant, when planning, to use wide lenses on different bodies (M8 and M9/ film) and having parallax correction as well.

It is more dim and has more distortion though, than the Konica 21/35 mm finder, that came with the lens.

I like the Konica for it's brilliant view and fantastic eye point, but would be willing, to get yet a better finder, if available (more compact, while retaining 21mm low distortion, brilliance, high eye point and enough scene outside the frame, to anticipate).

Here is the one, I bought @ roughly the same price, as a new Elmar:

........and he uses old words in a new way. I adore it.

From his 11-11-11 posting: "I ..... waited patently."

Always good to see the "English" language being used creatively - and also to see the timely reminder that such properties as taking 39mm filters and having a nine-bladed diaphragm are highly significant in reaching an opinion of the real worth of a lens. We shouldn't even seem to sneer at young Mr Rockwell though; I think I'd be happy to support my wife and family through playing with some very nice toys and writing egregious reports about them.

I haven't done anything but a basic checkout of the Super-Elmar-M 1:3.4/21mm ASPH (to give it its official name) because fog rests thick over Sweden. But it focuses where it should focus, it is practically as sharp in the plane of best focus at 3.4 as at 5.6 (stopping down will of course make the 'subject space' look sharper because of the increase of d.o.f.) and the lens is remarkably resistant to internal reflections, flare and irradiation.

The last term does not mean that it is immune against nuclear weapons. 'Irradiation' is the term for light 'eating away' at dark subject contours seen against a very bright background.

A note on the finder: It seems that the new style single-length accessory finders – or this one at least – have greater eye relief than the old plastic finders. This means that they are more useable by people who wear specs, at least as long as the lenses are reasonably thin. The dark outer field of the finder is less prone to intrude into the actual finder field with the bright line.

I think this is a winner.

For your information, here is the second exposure I made in the Schönherr shop as we unpacked the Super-Elmar. We had just come to the payment part. The two frames below need no explanation.

I was lucky to get a 21 SE (1st selling version) without any problems at all.

like steve huff probably would say: it’s a hell of a lens. :)

It takes a long time to count out 185 ¥100 notes. Perhaps someday China will realize that in a society based so heavily on cash transactions that it would be advantageous to have larger value notes. In China, for members who have not been, the largest denomination bill is the ¥100, which is worth about $15.75 USD or €11.50. It takes a long time to buy Leica cameras and lenses at that rate. For an M9 and lens you need a briefcase to carry the cash!!!!

As for viewfinders I love my Leica 12025, silver-chrome 21mm.
