The new 21mm Elmar 3.4

I got an email today from my dealer saying that he had received one, and only one, 21/3.4 Super Elmar-M from Leica USA. Apparently the demand for this lens is extremely high, no doubt compounded by the recall, so I feel very fortunate to be getting one. Let's hope that Leica can get more of these in the pipeline for everyone who has been waiting.

 

Now, if my 35 Summilux would just get here...

I hear most dealers got only one. Do you care to say which dealer you got yours from since I will then know if I have no shot at getting one, before a Holiday trip abroad, in case your dealer is also mine? If you want you can PM me.

I'm going to post more photos in the gallery, but here's an example from today taken with the new 21/3.4 Super Elmar M. The weather was total cr@p today, so I went to the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art and tried out this compact little lens. Like most museums the light was on the dark side, so I pushed the ISO up a bit, but this lens responded like a champ. Distortion is very minimal for an ultra wide angle, and because the reviews have been so positive I shot everything wide open.

 

Below is a shot of a local patron "enjoying" the tapestries. "Sometimes you just have to let art flow over you". This was wide open at f/3.4 and 1/15 at ISO 800. Conversion to B&W in Silver Efex Pro, but I have not done any cropping or straightening so you can see how the lens performs on it's own.

Yes, I got 2 frames with the patron in this position, but when I moved in to get a closer shot he sat up. 1/15 sec is slower than I like to shoot, but I didn't have time to bump the ISO up.

I know my technique is not good enough to shot at 1/15, but yours look ever so sharp.

I received mine two weeks ago. But I had pre-ordered it in June, with Schönherrs Foto in Stockholm.

 

And a very nice lens it is.

Hi Lars,

 

Congratulation with you new lens, I must admit I envy you a bit ;). Do you have snow now in Stochholm? I would be very interested in seeing an all-white color photo slightly overexposed to see how this lens/M9 copes with color problems on the sides. I take a lot of winter pics as I live in Tromsø.

 

If you any time have the opportunity please let me know.

 

Btw, I have not seen this lens in any of the Norway shops yet.

Got an email today - my 35 Lux will arrive tomorrow (the dealer got one)! Yay!

 

Selling the Summicron 35, plus a Leica UVa filter and metal hood (which I prefer to the square plastic thing).

 

I would probably have gone for the SEM 21, rather than my SX 21. But then again, I won't be changing in a hurry. The SX 21 might be a beast, but I like it a lot.

Not Lars and not Stockholm, but from Bergen/Norway with newly fallen snow. Out of the camera to the left, with Cornerfix to the right. Cornerfix is needed with my M9+21mm Elmar combo, but this may vary. Much improved compared to Zeiss Biogon 2.8/21mm (unfortunately out-of-house for the time being, so direct comparison can not be made).

I assume that the left photo is with the latest 21 Elmar profile. Looking at these photos I would say that the color shift is significant reduced compared to my Zeiss 18mm and CV 15/4,5 that IMO must have Cornerfix.

 

Hope you will have a white Christmas in Bergen :-).

I mounted one on my Black M9 in the LEICA store in Kuala Lumpur, but could not justify the purchase since I dont want to get another 21mm besides my 21 Summilux and WATE.

 

It is a very nice lens, lighter than the Summilux, I took a photo inside the store wide open. it was not bad actually.

I feel the M9 does an excellent job of correcting the 21/3.4SEM in camera, and do not plan to use Cornerfix. While there is a slight amount of vignetting there is no magenta edge. The vignetting is easily adjusted in Lightroom 3.

 

Here is a photo from last weekend. The first image is straight from the camera with lens detection ON, and the second is the same image with +35 vignetting correction in Lightroom 3.

 

Based on what I've seen so far I plan to not use Cornerfix, but rather apply vignetting correction for snow and other low contrast conditions.

The photo of the Lion was taken wide open at f/3.4 and I was probably about half a meter away.

 

Pete, the wall behind the Lion is stone, perhaps limestone, and definitely has color variations. Here's another version with +60 vignetting. I definitely think this is too much, but I just wanted to give you an extreme value so you could judge the effect.

Vignetting is easy to adjust but cyan shift remains the same on the wall (bottom right). Did you try Cornerfix to compare?

 

Sorry ICT, perhaps it is the color calibration of my iMac monitor, but I don't see any cyan on the bottom right wall.

 

My purpose with these examples was to demonstrate that for most people, IMHO, the need to use Cornerfix with the 21SEM is, if not eliminated, greatly reduced.
