Who's On Flickr?!

It all depends on what you want to do with your photos online. I have run my own site (which I built myself as a hobby) for ten years and was happy just publishing them for whomever stopped by. But I recently joined Flickr to get more feedback. I like if someone says a photo is nice as much as I like constructive criticism. I apply the same to my commenting of others' photos, i.e. both give encouraging remarks and add suggestions how to improve a photo.

The vast amount of images on Flickr is a bit of a drawback and creates a short attention span. So far, however, that hasn't bothered me.

The "awards" are useless and I don't join such groups or the post 1 comment X groups. The Discussions, however, are really useful and one can find excellent advice there.

I think Flickr's interface is ok. They really should add a better gallery function but since I have my own site it doesn't bother me. I like a lot that one can watch photos on a black background though. And I like the unlimited size of the images (for Pro members).

I don't know. For now, 500px is OK, but that's not what I'm in it for. I had over 400 shots on Flickr, but only about 30 on 500px.

This reminds me of Harold Davies's column at Photo.net which has some interesting advice on how to use Flickr.

I had a bunch of images on Flickr but pulled them after two separate Yahoo induced bouts of copyright infringement. In terms of feedback, I never saw anything constructive in terms of critique, just glowing remarks and cute awards.

I suppose one way to use Flickr would be to post a set of images on the site, then send a link to a respected colleague, editor or mentor and get real feedback. But if you are going to go to all that trouble, why not just meet with them in person?

These days, I do less and less and participate less and less on the internet and my life and photography is growing by leaps and bounds because of it. I meet up with friends, editors, attend photo festivals and get more out of one day of that than having 2,225 images on Flickr ever will.

I have cancelled my subscription to 500px (I can see no real advantage to paying them money) and similarly, I no longer pay Flickr. I just had a good clear out of loads of stuff I used to have up there.

I am unimpressed with 500px for the reasons previously stated and Flickr was a good place 5 years ago but has been left in the dark ages, IMO. It will be interesting to see what happens to them in the summer.
