Are you sure you don't exaggerate a little bit? Aside from yours truly there are not more than two or three grumpy old men on the LUF :D

I should start by pointing out that I have seen so many many genuinely friendly and encouraging responses here which give fantastic and often very detailed advice entirely for free and that is a wonderful thing. i don't mean to say the whole forum is at fault in this post.

But I don't think algrove exaggerates too much. From what I have seen there are no direct accusations of stupidity but god help anyone who may refer to a leica lens by the last three letters, or ask which camera or lens would be best to buy or to take on holiday, or, most heinously, ask for an opinion or suggestion on what bag to get. They will be "welcomed" by a barrage of ever so witty in jokes often at the OP's expense and without explanation, rolled eyes emoticons, curt dismissals and "why are you asking us" responses. What i fail to understand is why people who evidently detest these types of threads will enter the very same to make only a snide, imperious but entirely unhelpful comment. If you hate bag questions, or what lens to take on holiday questions then why not just ignore them?

I have seen a thread that specifically belittles "obvious" newcomers questions or other questions deemed pointless with a series of ready made, mostly facetious, answers. It may be intended to be lighthearted but it is telling of the underlying attitude of some and it is exactly the sort of "stupidity" posts that I believe algrove is referring to.

algrove,

I'd encourage you to ask anyway. If you have been shooting since 1966 you have lots to offer in return, and this place is more bark than bite. There were Leica forums in the past that were the other way around (links to current versions: here and here). I have been seriously over-occupied by cameras and photography since about 1971, but only bought my first Leica in 2004. Join in and keep things alive!

Chris

Thanks for your words. My problem is that I have been away from photography for far too long so that the transition to digital has almost become overwhelming from time to time. But to make up for lost time I have now recorded some 32k images from my M9 & GF1 (maybe 10% with the GF1) all with great pleasure in less than a year and I bet I have less than 500 keepers so far. For the past 2 weeks I have finally tackled LR3 and imported all the images. Now the sorting process begins with flagging and all. Have not even gotten out of the Library module yet!

In the mist of all this I continue buying my Leica goodies with great pleasure like most of us.

Once I figure out the best way how to get my DNG files over to PS5 and clean them up slightly I will then try to figure out how to post them so I can really get hit with comments on this forum.

Until then watch for more crazy, uninformed questions from me which most tolerate, but the ones that don't I guess never went through a learning phase like me. They must have been born with a camera and a computer mouse in hand.

I think a few - like me - changed our usernames when the forums switched. I changed again in 2008 due to software problems.

Looking at the last link reminded me. What happened to William G. Lamb III? He was a widely travelled and informative contributor to the old forum.

I too miss William's (lambroving) input. Although he doesn't post anymore he still visits quietly - last time was a week ago. Funny I was thinking of him when we took delivery of our new Freelander TD4 HSE last week.

He still has his gallery up.

I had lunch (or rather just the coffee) with William once. He showed my his various cameras in his Billingham. They were all inside individual plastic bags. He has no interest in shooting quickly, nor digital Ms.

When did computer mouses first appear? 1984? Hardly oldies then (relief) :D;)

I remember first using the old IBM PC-about the first of its kind. It had big old floppy disks 5.25". That was right around the year you mention. It seems in about 1981 those first came out.

Also remember the fist 10MB hard drive. Back then we thought it was a big revelation to have that.

How times have changed, huh?

When I joined the "old" Forum in October 2002, I guess I asked several rather simplistic questions (being relatively new to photography as well as completely new to Leica photography). But I found everyone very helpful and supportive, and I don't think I ever got patronised or put down. Maybe I was just lucky

Well, at least in those days no one could tell you to search the archives, because there were none <grin>.

As for the "what lens should I take/buy?" question, the answer's almost always the same "it's an impossible question to answer".

You mean this? Thanks for bringing it up. You'll hate this then.

Sadly, one of the ways in which this forum has changed over the years is that the number of people who choose to simply come here to relax and enjoy themselves and pass some time has fallen, whilst the number of those who take themselves faaaaar too seriously has increased. What used to be an enjoyable place to spend some time with like minded friends at times takes on the air of an invigilated exam. Woe betide anyone who dares to drift off-topic or - horrors! - makes an attempt at levity. They will be treated to a basilisk stare and a Daily Mail-style hurrumphing. Damn right there are daft questions. Those are questions that, if the OP engaged brain for a moment, they would realise are either unanswerable (what's better, 50mm or 35mm) or deeply personal (what lens should I buy next).

It's not a library. It's a forum. It's powered by people. When people stop wanting to come, because everything has been sterilised, catalogued, audited and approved by the self-appointed guardians of propriety, it will be a very grey world indeed.

Regards,

Bill

Agree with that. There are also too many self-promoters who use the forum as an extension of their Twitter accounts and blogs. You can tell that most of these individuals have no interest in the forum itself other than as a means of driving traffic to their websites.

That's true enough, but there's not much that can be done about it. Overtly commercial postings and accounts are "dealt with" of course, but it's just not tenable to prevent links to other blogs etc. After all, I have one :) but I don't do it for any commercial gain.

It really is a bit of a cheek to use the free forum here for commercial gain.

It's not the links that irritate me (after all, most of us have a link or two in our signatures) - it's the lack of engagement with the forum. The worst offenders seem to just start threads about something they have done or reviewed and make no other contributions in the forum other than a few 'thanks' in their own threads.
