I hate saying this, because I love my M4P; but I would also choose the Mint M4; despite the fact the finder goes down to only 35mm rather than the M4P's 28mm. M4=Wetzlar. M4P=Canada. TomB_tx Posted October 26, 2011 Share #5 Posted October 26, 2011 The M4 Jahre was a "last gasp" of the M4, as they were made in 1975, while Leica tried to end M4 production in 1971 (in favor of the M5). The restarted M4 production in 1974, black only, with about 40% being made in Canada. About 40% of the 1975 production were also made in Canada. There were some plain black M4 made in 1975 as well as the M4 Jahre version. There are also counterfit Jahre models out there, to increase their selling price. I have an "M5 Jahre" that has the wrong serial number range, and most certainly had the 50 Jahre logo added to increase the value. Check out all the details to see if it is really a 50 Jahre model. Myself I'd prefer a 1971 or earlier M4, as that was during "normal" production when the assembly care was at its best. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
luigi bertolotti Posted October 26, 2011 Share #6 Posted October 26, 2011 Me too would go for a M4 of the classic era... before digital such an M4 has been MY camera for lot of years, and never failed nor suffered from little accidents (and I can assure that, for instance, it took no few rain and some very cold trip) . M4P has only the advantage of 28 mm, and of course one could prefer this to a larger 135mm frame like in the classic. But that's about using... a M4 Jahre is also a collectible, and, with the above posted warnings on originality, can be a good investiment, probably better than a M4P, which has also a "jahre" version - (1913-1983 - chrome only) which curiosly is LESS rare than the "normal" chrome version : as a collectible, the M4P 70 jahre is interesting only if mint boxed and possibly with some 1913-1983 lenses. I have a M3 with a serial number over the million mark but it was not as hard to buy this as is buying the RIGHT M4. I'm going to take the advice of buying a M4 made in Wetzlar from the classic era. I thought an M3 would be the more sought after camera. Perhaps there were more M3s produced? Because it's hard to find a Wetzler M4 made '71 or sooner. Lots of M4-P from Canada. sandro Posted October 26, 2011 Share #12 Posted October 26, 2011 What is the main purpose for the camera you may buy? Do you collect or are you looking for a camera to actively use? I love my M4 and use it: reliable, great finder, wonderful feel and quiet. My M4-P has the advantage of the 28mm lines and the hot-shoe, may not be as quiet as the M4 but is a great working horse, very reliable also.
