In your "Version III" proclaiming reference article, Ashvin also maintains the existence of Version II (with the 49 mm filter) lenses in chrome.

His is the first statement I read about.

I think it is also flawed.

I'd like to see a picture of such a thing.

So would people at Leica, who have built them.

Do you have any other proves for your Version III claim than this source of information, where chrome Version II appear?

"A modified version II"

??

What exactelly are the modifications?

The MATE tended to flare at 50mm if the sun

was shining into the lens so the version 2, as far

as I can tell, later in its production had a coating

applied to some of its internal surfaces. Possibly

more but I haven't been able to find much, hence

the version 3.

Our very own "L-Camera Forum" has an L-Camera

leica Wiki. The L-Cameras' wiki on the 28-35-50 Mate

says something I find fascinating. You may as well.

The very first line starts off with "Leica Order No" it

states "Leica Order No - 11 890 (1st)- 11 625 (2nd + 3rd) etc., etc., etc.

What do you think L-Camera means by 1st, 2nd + 3rd????

First version was the E55 black. It was followed by the E55 in silver - of which they made only 500. Both have the same mount. After these came the E49 where the mechanics were improved, it also added a focusing tab for improved ergonomics and the distance scale got DOF markings. The optical cell is identical for all of them.

It is a tall 'ask', especially for younger members of the retail profession who rarely have any real personal experience of Leica equipment.

Heck, most of them have no point of reference except for their iPhone which is in their hand instead of in their pocket.

Yah…….unless he/she used their iPhone to access

the L-Camera LeicaWiki page for their info.

Mr. Edwin Puts the foremost Leica authority, states that there only 2 versions. Just because there are two different type sun visors on the E49MM version doesn't make the Mate a different version but, makes the visor a different type. I hope I explained that correctly.:)

Your absolutely right. Leica only made a MATE using

two different catalog numbers. The first version with

55mm filter threads and the second version with 49

mm filter threads.

The problem is, Leica made slight modifications to

the MATE version two. Leica didn't bother using a

new catalog number because the modifications

were internal and minor. The lens appeared identical

to the unmodified one. Why confuse us with a third

catalog number?

Well, collectors (and others) notice these differences

and have been differentiating the two version two's by

calling the modified version two a version three.

Is it a version three? No. Its a modified version two.

However, whenever a MATE is referred to as a version

three I know they are referring to a modified version two.

I guess from now till eternity the modified version two

may be called by some a version three. I haven't lost any

sleep over it. Especially since I now know what its all about.

I WOULD NOT sell it. To me it's a great lens, especially for traveling. I have 24, 28, 35, 50, 75, 90 & 135 primes but when I travel (for business with a little photography thrown in) all I take is the MATE and WATE. Admittedly there're not fast lens but are great for general photography. If I travel just for photography then I take the full bag of glass.

+1

I couldn't agree more. The MATE and the WATE are the first lenses into my bag when I'm traveling. I've recently returned from a 3 week trip to India, the MATE was invaluable on this trip.

I doubt those slight modifications for the following reason: According to the Wiki, those modifications apply to the version two MATE after Serial no. 3507154. Now, I bought my version two MATE 11 years ago, just after the version two was released, and my MATE has serial no. 389xxxx! There simply is no version two MATE with a serial no. anywhere near 350xxxx. People who own the version one MATE may check their serial no., I even doubt those to be near 350xxxx, as the version one was only produced for about two years.

Cheers,

Andy
