giordano Posted October 1, 2011 Share #23 Posted October 1, 2011 Bill's photo, to my eye validates the image taking of subjects in distressed circumstances.<snip> Does it? Assuming that the man was "in distressed circumstances" and not just taking a nap, one can argue that Bill exploited and objectified him by using him as a mere element in a careful formal composition, and that only an image that engaged with him and his view of the world could be authentic. Speaking for myself, I really like Bill's photograph (wish I'd done it myself;)) and cheerfully reduce all sorts and conditions of men* to elements in a composition. *Does anyone recognise the quote? daveleo Posted October 1, 2011 Share #25 Posted October 1, 2011 Let's add a "Troll" button. If 3 or more people hit the button on a posting, the Troll is banned for a month. We all look bad when a thread goes toxic because of some PITA drags a thread into the sewers.
stunsworth Posted October 1, 2011 Share #26 Posted October 1, 2011 If 3 or more people hit the button on a posting, the Troll is banned for a month. The only problem with that is that if 3 trolls decided to act as a group there'd only be three people able to post.

daveleo Posted October 1, 2011 Share #30 Posted October 1, 2011 The sentence that was deleted from my previous post was absolutely not "*******" That implication is really insulting to me. I hope that Jaap redit's why my sentence was removed. It is a common American phrase that means "don't think that eveyone is against you."
jaapv Posted October 1, 2011 Share #31 Posted October 1, 2011 This is an international forum. It may not have been meant the way it would have been read outside the USA, but it was better removed. I prefer to prevent disagreements.
daveleo Posted October 1, 2011 Share #32 Posted October 1, 2011 I have no problems that you or any moderator deleted whatever I wrote. But it is very unfair to me that you labelled my remartk "**************". You should correct the impression that you left by writing "********"

daveleo Posted October 2, 2011 Share #35 Posted October 2, 2011 My comment about the "Troll Button" did NOT apply to this thread, which I understand was tongue-in-cheek. I was thinking about a thread where I had just commented about a "troll in the house" : http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/people/203029-life-homeless-2.html#40 I came back here and thought to add a silly idea to this thread. I got a fairly ugly message about this, that I couldn't undesrtand, and just figured out (it is 2:19AM ! ) this possible misunderstanding.
azzo Posted October 2, 2011 Share #36 Posted October 2, 2011 Dave, I understood immediately what you meant and why about the ''troll button'' because I did the connection between this and the other thread. The problem seems to be that, not everyone was able to do the same, thus the misunderstanding. Hope this makes you feel a touch better. ...

daveolson Posted October 2, 2011 Share #40 Posted October 2, 2011 How can you "ban" a photograph. Need I remind everyone of the amount of "banning" by governments that occurred. First book burning, then only "acceptable" photography. The question becomes, "what is acceptable"? Who decides? Leni Rosenthal was accepted, and while she was a master in and of photography, she branded by professional photographers for the work she did in the 1920s, 30's and to the mid 40's, a fact that stayed with until her death. Banning also implies a form of censorship. Who are the censors?
