I've been making a a study of the early models and their values the last few weeks but I can't for the life of me figure out why this one is priced this way:

RARE 1930 LEICA I 35mm camera w 50mm f3.5 Elmar Serial#35050 | eBay

Can anyone shed some light on this? I understand it may be the seller be outlandish and if that's the reason ok but please no nasty remarks about the seller, other than he has used very bad judgement in setting his price :)

Thanks and take care,

Jim

I thought it was an inaccurate price. I also take exception to the "9++ out of 10" condition. It is an old camera but it hasn't aged gracefully. It's fortunate it hasn't been repainted though.

Thank you all for confirming I have learned a thing or two in my research.

Best,

Jim

I guess this must be the seller's marketing angle. Here's another of his auctions:

Black MP with Leciavit and 50mm Summicron for $250,000:

"Excellent+++" Leica MP Black Paint W/50mm f2 Lens 1958 | eBay

Interesting tactic. I guess it's partially successful since it's got us all looking at it and talking about it.

Unless one of us buys it, it isn't successful.

Personally, I'd be ready to pay that amount for the incredible, original, never-seen-before ever-ready case...

it's close focus version, less common, still taking into consideration condition of this Leica and applying factor 100 to the Buy it price would represent appropriate starting price. I believe it is known as well that the first Leica "imported" to US was Leica 107 sold earlier this year at Westlicht

Look at this listing. It is the ended listing where the seller who is offering this camera for $35,050,bought it for $463.00.

RARE 1930 LEICA I, 35mm camera w 50mm f3.5 Elmar | eBay

Here is the other listing to compare with.

As you can see,he used a good part of the description from the original listing in his own listing.

Thank you Robert, Very interesting ;). There is also someone who places 30 or 40 scarce Leica items into auction with a very low starting price, then in the description says do not bid, but contact an Email address and the price is A$1300 for each item. At least twice this auction site has deleted these items, but this person comes back under another name. Be careful.:eek:

Last year I found a scammer on ebay that had over 14,000 Leica M9 cameras for sale. Those listings didn't last long after I reported them.
