Palermo One Challenge: the arrangements and the rules

Palermo certainly didn't inspire me either, but, whatever, the pleasure of seeing so many of us (minus the 'absent friends' we toasted) made up for the weather and the sense of drabness.

I acknowledge it is a superficial judgement but I wonder if we're not going to see a lot of 'market photos'. Thanks, Pete, for a perfect organization.

Already looking forward to next year's destination.

Big thank you to Pete for organizing such a wonderful week end. We had a great time meeting everybody, old and new faces. Our lunch was out of this world, not only food, but also great company. And looking forward to next year, wherever it may be. Quite often, it is the company, not the place, that makes it great. Good luck to all.

Our last day in Palermo, just ahead of us.

Very Big thank you to Pete for doing such a great job organising things. We both really enjoyed it. And a wonderful long, boozy lunch on Sunday, followed by a great spontaneous couple of hours of street shooting in the amazing friendly slum some of us had found the day before.

Thanks to everyone else too for being such good company, and not wishing to single anyone out, but especially to John (erl) for being so full of life, passionate and such an inspiration.

Sorry for those who didn't take to Palermo. We found it to be one of the best venues for street photography, and the people generally more friendly and accommodating to photographers than most you find in Europe - and we both travel and photograph extensively in Italy. It also felt far more safe not only than we imagined, but than many parts of Northern Europe. People in the poorest parts would not only be happy to be photographed, some of them asked to be, and a couple exchanged numbers so they could one day see their pictures. Perhaps its more about one's perception. Anyway, as others say, we very much look forward to seeing all the photos.

We really hope that we can continue to visit places like this, and we know Istanbul and Morocco have both been mentioned, as well as more conventional Northern European cities, and perhaps a good way around this is to do something a little more 'safe' one year and something a little more 'adventurous' the next, alternating it.

Looking forward to next year wherever it is.

Nick and Ripon

(the photo attached is of John (erl) in the very nice Restaurant we ended up having dinner with, having just bumped into a photographer from China with his M9 and Noctilux 0.95 who just happened to be having dinner on the next table! - taken by Nick with M9, CV 35 f1.2 v2 1600 iso)

First of all - now that I have a few more minutes to type something - a great big thanks to Pete! It all ran smoothly - even if the Sunday lunch venue for those staying on was closed! No real problem though.

Shame that the weather was not as good as it could have been - irritating to have bight sunshine and fluffy white clouds when heading to the airport on Monday -

Great to meet up with everyone - "old" friends and new faces - it's one of the attractions of the weekend.

Unlike some I found Palermo a fascinating and very interesting city, and did not feel threatened at all - certainly no more than places in London. Only once did someone wave a no-no hand when the camera was aimed. I would go back.

Here's to next year - wherever it might be.

Isn't it interesting how different people's impressions of a place can be so radically different? It might be because I am not very comfortable taking photographs of strangers that I found the place intimidating, I don't know.

I also look forward to next year :)

Comparison to earlier times can make a difference as well - the first time I saw Palermo about twenty years ago, traffic appeared to me completely crazy. A neighbour of my mother, who was born in the countryside of Sicily, remembers that his father once refused to drive on in Palermo, since he couldn't stand the traffic. I found the situation to be much calmer this time compared to my first visit.

We've just got home after two days of glorious sunshine in Tuscany (Cortona).

We're with Nick and Ripon - we really enjoyed Palermo, didn't think it was threatening, and most people seemed pleased to have their picture taken.

One little girl who touched Emma for a couple of euros . . . . we bumped into an hour or so later, I was expecting another 'touch' - but no - Emma got a great big kiss!

We'd certainly go back - but spend some time out of the city as well.

all the best to all the best!!

Thank you to the whole group for making Ritsuko and myself, very new Leica shooters, feel very welcome.

As for Palermo, we had low expectations due, but it turned out to be a great place to wander, especially around the port and closer to the bus/train station. I'm all up for the adventurous places.

Hope to see you again,

Dan & Ritsuko (pronounced Lits-ko)

I had great time with all Forum members. Special thanks to Pete for his organization and helping with my iPhone ;)

I am now in Catania in a faulous B&B. Looks and feels like the Vatican interior! The best restaurant so far Pete! Syracuse tomorrow.

Erl.

Glad to help.:)

I journeyed back to the airport with a chap who'd just come back from Catania, Taormina and Syracuse and his reason for being there was to visit the island of Stromboli, which harbours (so he told me) the only only volcano in the world where you can actually look into and see (minor!) eruptions taking place. Other volcanos let you see lava flowing but this one hurls rocks around although it's pretty safe or they wouldn't allow you to see it.

He said it's an energetic climb to the top and they take you up in parties and kit you out in hard hats etc so if you're looking for something to do for a couple of days then this might be worthwhile if only to shoot the expressions of wonderment on others' faces bathed in the glow of volcanic eruptions.

Just a thought.

Pete.

Ripon and I got the overnight ferry from Palermo to Napoli last night - if you can get a cabin John, it's a very nice way to travel..

Now in my house in Italy for a couple of days with fond memories of Palermo and meeting all of you.

Not posting any of my Leica photos yet, for obvious reasons, but just for fun here is a little Hipstamatic iPhone diary:

I enjoyed those, thanks for sharing them.. Another satisfied Hipstamatic user here. I hesitated for ages before buying the app, but am now glad that I did.

These are great Nick - and I'm jealous of the overnight ferry as well.

I'll be interested to see how the hipstamatic performs with the new 4s and it's revamped camera. . . . must give it a try!

all the best to you both

Many thanks guys

The biggest reservation I have about Hipstamatic on an iPhone is when I think I have taken a better photo than on my proper camera gear, and wondering why I bother! My Challenge submission will probably be rubbish now!

In truth though, of course the iphone and Hipstamatic is seriously limited - I have made some nice 7x7 prints but wouldn't want larger, one focal length lens only, no real control over iso exposure or focus etc etc. But that's all kind of the joy too. The main rason I shall try and upgrade to an iPhone 4s is that I am using the iPhone for photography with Hipstamatic nearly every day now - though it will never really compete or replace my real cameras - and I'm hoping the 4s upgrade will allow for even nicer results...
