Michael Hiles Posted September 1, 2011 Share #41  Posted September 1, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Anne, developing C41 B&W is a little more complicated, mainly due to the higher temperature required. I never bothered. To be honest I prefer the look of traditional films, I find the C41 ones to lack character. They have a lack of grain, but I don't like the look. Personally I'd chose FP4 or Tri-X every time.  As far as I know, developing C41 is basically simple - but chemicals for modest quantities are limited to a kit available from Tetenal. I have never done it, mainly due to the effort obtaining the kit (maybe I'm lazy). Having my film run through a machine is less effort and the results have been consistently perfect.  The look is, of course, a matter of opinion. I greatly respect Steve and his pictures - but I don't agree. I suggest that you try, and decide what you like.

andybarton Posted September 1, 2011 Share #42 Â Posted September 1, 2011 Kits for developing C41 (and E6) only make sense if you have a lot of film to develop in a short space of time - and then have the time to develop them. Â The chemicals go off very quickly - unlike most B&W chemicals, which last for months.
prunelle Posted September 1, 2011 Author Share #43 Â Posted September 1, 2011 It's a real sign of the times (and the direction of this forum) that a thread has been set up for film M photography - as if there is something peculiar about Leica shots made using film. It doesn't seem very long ago that M photography was, by definition, always film photography. It's me who decided to create this thread. The "direction" of this forum has nothing to do with it. stunsworth Posted September 1, 2011 Share #46 Â Posted September 1, 2011 I greatly respect Steve and his pictures - but I don't agree. I suggest that you try, and decide what you like. Â Well in fairness to me I did say it was a _little_ more difficult. Temperature control is very important and the developing process is at a higher temperature. ddp Posted September 1, 2011 Share #48  Posted September 1, 2011 Pont des Arts just before dusk. I was heading back to my flat. One frame and I left them. M6, Noctilux, Provia 100    Nice, nice shot.  Great idea for a thread BTW...and I will say what I have said before...these lenses render differently on film. End of story.

Temperature control is very important and the developing process is at a higher temperature. Â :oI wasn't disagreeing about temperature control at all - my experience in this regard is that consistency and some accuracy is very important - just commenting on variance of opinion re: the chromogenic B&W films. I agree about their grainless creaminess. But those properties have their adherents (guess who...).
