MachineGun Posted August 25, 2011 Share #1 Posted August 25, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) On the link on the top of this page to E Bay there are several dealers offering Leica M9P for sale If I were to buy one, how would I get the warranty from Leica. Are these not considered "grey" cameras? Do you not have to buy from authorized dealers to get the warranty? Thanks MachineGun
Advertisement Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 Hi MachineGun, Take a look here Question. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lct Posted August 25, 2011 Share #2 Posted August 25, 2011 No but you'll need a Leica warranty card to have the body repaired for free at Solms so make sure the former is in the package. I would ask a copy of it to the dealer. Then check that there is a bar code printed on it. You should also find the body's five digits order number (10716 for the M9-P) and seven digits serial number (4105263 for instance) under the bar code. earleygallery Posted August 25, 2011 Share #3 Posted August 25, 2011 If you're buying from a recognised dealer, as opposed to a 'trader' then avoid ebay and deal direct, and pay by credit card. Many credit card companies will not honour the protection one is usually entitled to if you pay via paypal rather than directly. I know paypal also offer protection but it's not as watertight as your legal rights under your credit agreement. I'm sure that one day ebay will be recognised legally in the same way as other online traders or retailers (for 'retail' transactions), but it's still very much a grey area at the moment. jaapv Posted August 25, 2011 Share #4 Posted August 25, 2011 Leica will not require the warranty card, in fact European law would forbid that. Proof of (original) purchase is what counts. As far as factory guaranty is concerned there is no grey import.
lct Posted August 25, 2011 Share #5 Posted August 25, 2011 This is a matter of contractual, not statutory warranty. Any proof of purchase from a grey dealer does not prove that the item is warranted by the maker.
jaapv Posted August 25, 2011 Share #6 Posted August 25, 2011 Over the years Leica has not required a warranty card of me or anybody that I know of. They did ask for bills of sale and/or when applicable the Passport. In a number of cases those were items purchased for instance from Hong Kong or other foreign countries, so they could have been regarded as grey import - but they were not. The only thing I have seen in this forum is that they have required the original papers on used items to establish proof of ownership. Once Leica even repaired a DLux4 under warranty without any paperwork provided at all(I lost it) " We can see when it was shipped out of the factory, so that is fine with us" However, it would not do to make that a habit, I suppose. lct Posted August 25, 2011 Share #7 Posted August 25, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) The OP's referring to such grey dealers Jaap. My advice above is a good one for him. BTW you know at least one person who's been asked for his warranty card by Leica: Me.
jaapv Posted August 26, 2011 Share #8 Posted August 26, 2011 Well, I would agree that it is wise to be careful in such matters. A simple check with Leica would be sufficient imo.
