semori Posted August 21, 2011 Share #1 Â Posted August 21, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have inherited a huge load of camera equipment, and want to get rid of it (I don't take pictures at all). Does anyone have experience with selling through a dealer and can recommend someone (in Europe) that do a good job? I know I will get less for the gear, but since I know little about the lenses and cameras, I do not want to sell it privately.
Advertisement Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 Hi semori, Take a look here Experience with selling through dealer?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
patashnik Posted August 21, 2011 Share #2 Â Posted August 21, 2011 You don't say what equipment it is (Leica?), but I have used Ffordes in Scotland before, and they did a more than adequate job. You can email them with a list of what you have, and if they're interested they'll give you an estimate of what it would sell for. This would of course differ with what you're selling. Â As for getting less for your gear, I've been trying to sell a couple of items (Leica MP, Leica 35mm Summicron-M ASPH and Leica 35mm Summilux pre-ASPH), and have had some interest, but nothing that came to anything. I sent them an email outlining the condition of the camera and lenses + some pics, and they responded with an estimate that actually was higher than what I was trying to sell it for myself! Because they usually give 6 months warranty on used stuff that they sell, they are also able to charge more for the gear. If I remember correctly, they have a 20 % flat commission rate. Even though it sounds like a lot, to me it is fair considering what it would cost to sell it on eBay (including PayPal charges). Â The only negative is that it takes a while, expect around four weeks from it sells until you have the cash in your pocket. Â So, if you're looking for an endorsement, I will bring them my stuff next time I go to the UK You might lose out on the last $'s, but it really takes the hassle out of selling. jaapv Posted August 21, 2011 Share #3 Â Posted August 21, 2011 I have very good experiences with ffordes. Fair dealer prices and they check the gear thoroughly before accepting it, if you sell on commission, which gets the best price.
bill Posted August 21, 2011 Share #4 Â Posted August 21, 2011 I have very good experiences with ffordes. Just for balance, I haven't. Â Regards, Â Bill
microview Posted August 21, 2011 Share #5 Â Posted August 21, 2011 My first Leica (M6TTL+ 50mm Summilux) came from Aperture near British Museum, London. I have continued to buy and sell there for around five years and recommend them highly. A lens in mint condition is often gone in a few days; they take 20% commission and the buyer gets a guarantee. Payment is made about 10 days after sale (indicated by web listing). Leica - Aperture uk
Holybasil Posted August 21, 2011 Share #6  Posted August 21, 2011 Just for balance, I haven't. Regards,  Bill  I can't comment on selling through them, but my experiences with ffordes are the same as Bill. Avoid like the plague.
asmith Posted August 22, 2011 Share #7 Â Posted August 22, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have bought many things from ffordes and never had the slightest problem. Goods have always been as described and promptly delivered. But if you don't want to deal with them, try Stephens in Manchester with whom I have had more than forty years happy dealings - both buying and selling. stuny Posted August 22, 2011 Share #9 Â Posted August 22, 2011 Are we correct in assuming you want to sell them through a dealer in the UK? If not, where?
russell Posted August 22, 2011 Share #10 Â Posted August 22, 2011 I've bought two items from Ffordes in the last 18 months and I have no complaints. But that's not to say other people haven't had problems that I'm not aware of.
masjah Posted August 22, 2011 Share #11 Â Posted August 22, 2011 ffordes have always been OK with me. (I'm aware though that other Forum members have had less happy experiences.)
spylaw4 Posted August 23, 2011 Share #12 Â Posted August 23, 2011 Forum rules (and modesty) prevent me from recommending another certain Leica dealer, so I won't.

alun Posted August 23, 2011 Share #15 Â Posted August 23, 2011 I have also sold equipment through Ffordes and found the service excellent -- I got a good price (considering the equipment sold: Contax G2 and lenses) and more swiftly than I had thought would be the case. I have also purchased a number of Leica items from Ffordes with equal satisfaction.
Tinribs Posted November 10, 2011 Share #16 Â Posted November 10, 2011 I have both purchased (new and S/H) and sold equipment with Ffordes over a period of about five years. I have never had the slightest cause for complaint. All dealings have been straightforword, efficient and honest. Â I appreciate that some other members seem to have had a different experience, but I would have no hesitation in using them again in the future. earleygallery Posted November 10, 2011 Share #17 Â Posted November 10, 2011 A huge amount of gear? The dealer route is worthwhile if you have high value items but it could be a load of pretty worthless stuff too. It all depends on what you actually have. Â If I were you I would try to research some of the gear by typing the makes/models into google, and completed eBay auctions. Or if still in doubt, if you list everything individually on eBay with 99p start prices and good descriptions and photos, you will pretty much get the going rate for each item, less the fees of course. Bill Allsopp Posted November 10, 2011 Share #18 Â Posted November 10, 2011 Anyone think they're wasting their time? The OP has only ever made one post and never thanked anyone for their input.

eudemian Posted November 10, 2011 Share #20 Â Posted November 10, 2011 I do not question the veracity of those who have had bad experience at Ffordes but this is not my experience. Sold two lenses to fund the M9-P. Got a fair price and the cheque did not bounce. Wonder why there are such diametically opposed experiences with the same firm?
