geotrupede Posted August 18, 2011 Author Share #4 Posted August 18, 2011 Ronan, I was surprised ...because it is an old piece of kit with 73 years of use. And I did expect to see all sort of light leaks and lazy shutter... Most of the shots are 1/1000! Plus the lens is a bit foggy :-) Anyway, I was yesterday at one of the pre Olympic (london) events and had a chat with a couple of photographers in the media boxes. Both had Canon eqiupment, I did not see any Leica user there... none. Ant to be honest I did not see any at other 3 media events for the Olympics... Just me, a non professional user. Speaking to them I mentioned that they sounded like machine guns, and observed the way to use this. For example a player is about to score, so you press and hold the shutter for 10 / 20 frames and will surely get a good shot. Illuminance was about 1500 which means 1/150 with f2 and ISO 100. Cool stuff. In future we should give more credit to other brands that surely can do good things. Leica is a passion but let's be honest, just for very few a tool used to generate income. Obviously most of the people benefiting from this brand are shop owners :-) So let's be all friend. I never had a Canon. I wish I had one (why not). I am sure that it is a good equipment as it is used in critical production... But it may not be so good anymore in 2084 :-)

ismon Posted August 18, 2011 Share #6 Posted August 18, 2011 "Leica is a passion but let's be honest, just for very few a tool used to generate income." Really? My passion for Leica has been the reason for my success in the profession. The equipment generates income, is free (pays for itself), lasts forever, and appreciates in value with age. As competators had to buy multiple outfits (35mm, 120, 4x5) with all their incompatible lenses, filters, and accessories, I used Leicas only. One unified system. Are you really surprised that a 1932 lens works perfectly on an M9? It's the Leica Way! When the M8 was introduced, I bought some more Leica F (1934) bodies. You don't always need the newest to have the best. Every Leica is the best. Let the others waste their money on disposable equipment. Leicas remain the gold standard for a reason, not for a fad or fashion.

tobey bilek Posted August 18, 2011 Share #8 Posted August 18, 2011 So he is just learning. Everybody has to start somewhere, you did. I do enjoy my 111F and 111c , but you should see the looks I get when I have a pro Nikon digital in the other hand. Most do not get it.
Stealth3kpl Posted August 18, 2011 Share #9 Posted August 18, 2011 C'mon, chaps, cut the man some slack! Bill Quite. I believe he was merely saying how pleasantly surprised he is at just how well the old and the new blend. I think some have been drinking too much caffeine recently Pete
geotrupede Posted August 18, 2011 Author Share #10 Posted August 18, 2011 'he' ! ? what is about the internet? we do not know each other! I do not know you, and yet you address me as 'he' between each other. It is a remarkably sad behaviour. I do not think is just caffeine. I think is a bit of unjustified snobbery. Who are you to do so? Possessing 600g of metal and glass... Is this enough to belong to a elite? Where is the merit? Can you buy merit? Is it just about money? How sad would that be.... My original post was about a very simple statement: that a IIIa is a remarkably good device considering its age (73 years old). I merely wanted to share my enthusiasm. Big error, as obviously a wall of snobbery got in the way. I am not a snob. I have nothing to share with snobs. Goodbye. G

Leicas remain the gold standard for a reason, not for a fad or fashion. Excellent. You are then somebody very special. I know no other professional using Leica. A lot of amateurs (very good as well) but no professionals. I have seen remarkable picture on the net (for example Riccis's) but in percentage these are not significant. The bulk of professional users is gone for SLRs as they are easier to use. As simply as that. If you are paid to deliver and need to do so, you will pick up the easiest and most reliable way. There is no point to risk you a** you if do not need to... Obviously coming from 1964 you may still prefer to do the same way, but the new generations will not follow as similar results are available to them with a fraction of your knowledge and skills... It has become just a matter of frames per second and memory card size. Sad but true. G

Just a quick philological note about the Leica name. -no offense intended and please correct me if I am wrong- I think it is either: Leica 3a or Leica IIIa I think Leica 111a is not correct as the III is the Roman notation for 3. Anybody else can confirm? G
