Not sure if they are reasonably priced but my all time favorites are the Leica nylon strap # 14226 from the seventies (no pic sorry) and the earlier Leica leather strap # 14092 or its (nicer) Luxe Case copy.

Two things speak against the swivel version...

I don't find that the swivels get in my way, but they do have a tendency to scratch the camera. Actually, I bought the swivel version because of its quick-release function; but I've seldom used that ability.

Whatever version, I find the Domke straps quite convenient and comfortable, particularly so when used as replacements for other brands of strap which scream the name and model number of the camera they were supplied with.

LCT, isn't the 14226 the strap supplied with the R3?

That was a lovely fabric strap but its reversed J-hooks were made of steel and could (and did) damage the chrome-plated brass strap lugs of earlier Leicas.

Thanks for the illustration of the Luxe Case strap. I didn't know that a version of the 14092 was still available. :)

Lars, what does a blacksaddler do? We don't seem to have the word in English (OED doesn't know it, Google suggests "Blackadder"), so I'm guessing you've calqued a Swedish term.

The term exists in English. It refers to a saddler who specialises in draught horse tack (harness etc.)

Lars

Would you mind telling me the name of the Domke swivelless strap you recommend as when I search for it online I keep seeing the swivel type listed and am not sure which strap you are referring to.

Thanks

Neale

Howard, the 14226 strap was supplied with the R3 and the M4-2 as well. Its hooks are protected by the leather bottom of the strap and never damaged my M4-2 i must say.

SL's and SL-2's had chrome-plated brass strap lugs. The R3 had a steel insert in the opening of the brass strap lug. I'm not that clear on the M cameras' lug designs.

I've seen Leicaflexes' strap lugs worn almost through because it's such a nice strap and some dealers weren't aware that it wasn't a universal strap. In the catalog it was labeled "Strap R3" but that wasn't enough warning.

One of Leica's best strap designs IMHO.

PS--

I also saw one case where the camera owner had turned the two J-hooks on each end so their openings matched, rather than opposing each other. "Easier to get the strap on and off," the owner explained.

I bought two of them for my two Leicaflex SL bodies sometime in the seventies or so - and that was exactly what happened! Those hooks ATE the lugs...

I noticed it just in time, and scrapped those straps (if one can indeed scrap a strap....:p). Since then, I´m almost paranoid in checking lug wear regularly.

I've found that the adjustable Artisan & Artist ACAM 103n are simple yet nice, and very comfortable wearing the camera for extended periods of time. I know a lot are happy with the free leica strap but I found it uncomfortable, almost cutting into my skin after if used for longer than an hour, but that's just my experience

I enjoy the Tamarac strap with two quick-release fasteners that allow the most

of the strap to get out of the way when the camera is used on long-range davices

which have their own strap. But, for use on the M-9 as a ‘’normal’’ strap…. the grip

of the suede shoulder pad is unbeatable!

I've nine M cameras and have gone through many straps. The worst are wide and/or thick, regardless of material. Both the M7s have Pacsafe CarrySafe straps which are very good, but don't pack in a tight bag as nicely as I like. It will keep someone from slashing the strap to steal it, but like most security devices, a thief with some knowledge can unclip the strap. (I can bust most secure devices such as bike locks, cable locks, combination locks but then I'm such a hacker. Did you know that most 'Master' locks have two combinations?)

But I like the stock strap now.

When I got the M9 I kept the stock strap. I like it. The shoulder pad is secure, it is light and packs perfectly well. I've put grips (and motors or 'vits' on all my film cameras due to hand issues), and that stock M strap is great because it winds around my hand without bulk.
