Studio58 Posted August 2, 2011 Share #1 Posted August 2, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) So I got my new 24mm elmarit. This is some lens... really nice. I reckon i could get the hang of it without an external vf. Would like to hear opinions from both sides...

Shadow Blaster Posted August 2, 2011 Share #4 Posted August 2, 2011 Only time I don't use my dedicated Leica 24mm viewfinder is when I have the flash on. John S.
!Nomad64 Posted August 2, 2011 Share #5 Posted August 2, 2011 If you have an M8 you don't need the vf. If you have an M9 or any other standard M camera you'll miss it. Probably - and I stress probably - you might use the external viewfinder frame as a hint on a la carte cameras fitted with a .58x viewfinder. Lord Fluff Posted August 2, 2011 Share #6 Posted August 2, 2011 Depends if you like to compose with some degree of accuracy or if you're happy with a rough guess.
jaapv Posted August 2, 2011 Share #7 Posted August 2, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well yes, but with exoperience you will be able to estimate the angle of view of your lens
luigi bertolotti Posted August 2, 2011 Share #8 Posted August 2, 2011 As a M8-only user, I haven't the issue with 24... but often use the 21 without finder - easy guess.framing, and, to be pedant, with a WA often is more important to have the camera well leveled... and I find it's a bit more frequent to have vertical or horizontal lines in the image "next" to one of the inner framelines for 24... Lord Fluff Posted August 3, 2011 Share #9 Posted August 3, 2011 Well yes, but with exoperience you will be able to estimate the angle of view of your lens Yes, which is essentially what I just said. If you're the kind of person who shoots with their camera above their head, at arms length, or with their eyes closed, you'll be fine. If you want to actually compose an image precisely, then it's obvious that no amount of experience will obviate the need for a viewfinder of that focal length. Of course the way many people get round this is to shoot a frame, look at how it came out, shoot again - all depends on what you're planning on shooting really. Per P. Posted August 3, 2011 Share #10 Posted August 3, 2011 I have the Zeiss vf but for me the increased accuracy in framing that it provides is offset by challenges with keepign the horizon level. So unless I use tripod, which I rarely do, there is an element of hit and miss both with and without vf.
Rick in CO Posted August 3, 2011 Share #11 Posted August 3, 2011 I have the 25 ZM Biogon and don't bother with an additional VF. If you see it in the full M9 finder, it will be captured. You get a little extra this way, but you can always check the lcd to ascertain you have what you want. The VF framelines are not perfectly exact anyway.
