BJDrew Posted July 19, 2011 Share #1 Posted July 19, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Okay, Leicaphiles. you've gotten the new firmware update. You've had enough time to feel pretty confident the high ISO performance is improved. I happened to take a series of shots of the same scene directly before and after the update and posted some 100% crops to test this out. Is it a Solms miracle? The L-Camera-Placebo-Effect? Leica M8 June 2011 Firmware – before/after | Leica BOSS You be the judge. (And please... I traded in my camera testing laboratory for a flat screen. This is more reflective of real world shooting than DxO labs... if shots of beer bottles and NyQuil counts as "real world)

Doc Henry Posted July 19, 2011 Share #2 Posted July 19, 2011 Placebo effect or not In the last picture at 1250 Iso, the grain is finer and the red is red ! Thank you for the comparison BJ Best Henry
Holybasil Posted July 19, 2011 Share #3 Posted July 19, 2011 We've already had this conversation, haven't we? http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/188294-cleaner-fw-2-014-a-2.html You're such a slowpoke, Bart
luigi bertolotti Posted July 19, 2011 Share #4 Posted July 19, 2011 Agree that there can be a component of placebo, but pictures (thanks !) and Doc Henry remark confirm my feeling : something slightly better at 1250, but nothing that should deserve a specific declaration by Leica (which would have "reversed/backfired" the placebo effect... ... "improvement at high ISO..." where hell is it ?)
Doc Henry Posted July 19, 2011 Share #5 Posted July 19, 2011 Hi Luigi, Thanks for your comment I compared the photos of the cathedral before and after the new firmware I noticed a significant improvement in image at 1250 Iso too See here: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/189947-quality-1250-asa-2.html Best Henry
BJDrew Posted July 19, 2011 Author Share #6 Posted July 19, 2011 We've already had this conversation, haven't we?http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/188294-cleaner-fw-2-014-a-2.html You're such a slowpoke, Bart I am a slowpoke for sure - the only significant difference is that in all the other comparo's I've seen - it's clearly labeled which frame was BEFORE and which was AFTER... which is a great way to enhance the placebo effect rather than detect it! Given that I've seen so much variability frame to frame with the M8 in general, I'll tip my hand and say that I wouldn't feel comfortable arguing that there is a practical difference in sensor noise, if any, in performance at ISO 1250... even as a "You Gotta Believe" NY Mets fan, I cannot believe in the miracle of improved lowlight performance. efix Posted July 19, 2011 Share #7 Posted July 19, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) You see what you believe to see. I see nothing. And if there is in fact a difference, it is nothing short of negligible and probably will not matter whatsoever for a real world scenario.
