archi4 Posted July 17, 2011 Author Share #2 Posted July 17, 2011 Andy If I overreacted I do apologize. I realize now that there is another thread on this topic. However, I have always done my best to answer posters directly and assist them to the best of my ability although I often suspect there may be an answer elsewhere. regards maurice

Shootist Posted July 24, 2011 Share #11 Posted July 24, 2011 I agree with you And so do many in the 100 post thread. And the forum search feature/function SUCKS. I have done many searches for topics I know exist, even using the exact title, and come up with garbage. What is the forum running out of disk space? farnz Posted July 25, 2011 Share #12 Posted July 25, 2011 And the forum search feature/function SUCKS. I have done many searches for topics I know exist, even using the exact title, and come up with garbage. Ed, Personally I've found the search function to be okay - much the same as any other. Can you give us some examples? Alternatively, if you're unhappy with the search function then, as you probably already know from your background in computing, you can use the Google search engine to search for results for "shootist" exclusively in the forum's URL using the syntax: shootist site:l-camera-forum.com (It finds 6,160 matches.) HTH, Pete.
hoppyman Posted July 26, 2011 Share #13 Posted July 26, 2011 Andy I think all of the Mods should immediately have their Forum performance bonuses stopped and salary packages reviewed .... oh wait. Ronan Posted July 29, 2011 Share #15 Posted July 29, 2011 Little information from someone thats been a member of many forums (i have a LOT of hobbies...) and even build/hosted/moderated a couple of them. -Abuse of mod power: MOST of the time this is NOT the problem. Moderators are usually NOT paid and do this out of their heart (I <3 U M0ds, Plz $ t0 m1 P@yp@l). Forums are also usually under staff. If a moderator seems 'short' on someone, it's probably because he has to deal with his work, personal life + forum duties. Give him/her a break and talk it up (mods are only human. Admins are superhuman though...). If he/she seems to have a general 'bad/short' attitude, take it up with someone in charge. But remember, everyone has a bad day (that goes for moderators AND users). -Elitism in forums is a real issue that happens in many if not all the forums i have been acquainted with. The best way to fight this is 'if you have nothing to contribute... shut up'. Contrary to internet believes, your join date, post count or 'special' title doesn't give you the privilege/authority to tell someone to take the door. -Directing someone to the proper thread is not only helpful, it's polite. *Think of this little situation many have encountered. Someone asks you for direction... would you tell him/her to go look it up on a map or 'google' it? No, that's quite rude. *If someone asks the same question, kindly point him in the right direction and give him a quick answer. Show him the SEARCH feature and maybe the answer he/she is looking for. NOTHING obligates you to do that, but remember... 'if you have nothing to contribute... shut up'. Telling someone to go FAQ (see what i did there) himself or to go search it and then leave him like that, is NOT contributing. It's like me telling you that you need air in your flat tire. Durp durp durp. -Treat people online the same way you treat people in your daily life. Just because theirs less consequences 'online', doesn't mean its an excuse to be rude/impolite/troll. This is all pretty common sense, but since i have been told by a great man that the human race is short on that... P.S: If you believe you are better than someone else, think again. Theirs always a bigger dog around the corner P.S2: English is not my first language, i apologize for any spelling mistakes and weird phrases. Nazi Grammar, take a chill pill, theirs a couple thousands teenagers that can benefit from you vocabulary and literature skills. Have a nice weekend everyone
farnz Posted July 30, 2011 Share #16 Posted July 30, 2011 Explain this one please - I don't understand what your meaning is here. Paul, I think (and, Pico, please correct if I'm wrong) that Pico was referring to the Google advanced search syntax that will force the Google search engine to search for a specific term or string in a particular website only. Please refer to post 22 in this thread. The search engines on some websites (and I'm not referring to this website) are weak and the Google search engine will produce more effective tools for searching and better results. Pete. Ronan Posted July 30, 2011 Share #17 Posted July 30, 2011 Interesting; I just came back from another forum (which i won't name) and a nice thread turned into an ego pumping. A new member started a thread in a way to help the host save a couple $$$ by having users save their rendering on their PC instead on the server (which takes virtual space). After a couple people responded polity, you had the usual clueless newbie that posted wrong information while trying to help. After that you had a certain moderator that pumped his chest a bit to show everyone he was in charge of that part of the website and tried to diminished the OP's suggestion a bit. The OP was quite offended from being diminished and borderline insulted for just suggesting something to help the host. Which was 100% valid... it's the way the 'more' tech knowledge members do it. Funny thing is i know that moderator and he never acts like that 'in the real world'. Someone should write a book about virtual interaction and how it can differ from one's normal interaction with people in normal society... But yes! Do use google as a forum search engine. The host/admin could add it as a search engine option too.

dave.gt Posted August 5, 2011 Share #19 Posted August 5, 2011 Andy, Good move closing the thread. The OP has posted many threads on the same topic on every Leica forum I am on and even got to Leica Rumors. Tiring and unnecessary.

Please refer to post 22 in this thread. I have a search tool bar installed in Firefox that defaults to Google, but can be changed to search five other sites, too (and more if you add them). It appears just to the right of the address bar.
