hi guys n gals.

I have a very humble 11f that currently has a an inadequate summar 5cm 1:2 on it. i think i NEED a better lens, but it is so confusing. i just want a 5cm, and if i am spending all this money, i want something that takes very nice pictures. could we have some discussion about what is good, particularly almost wide open? i just have NOOO idea what to look for.

thanks in advance, Emma

If you stay with Leica lens the 50 available/not to expensive, are the collapsible 2/50 Summicron or the 2.8/50 Elmar.

The Summitar is the last choice.

The other way can be to look about the Voigt production in the camaraquest web site.

In my view, an Elmar 3.5/50, preferably the so-called red scale version of that lens, would be the classic choice. It is relatively cheap, very usable even wide open, and makes for a compact and lightweight outfit.

I would agree with Andy on this one. The 5cm f3.5 Elmar is perfect on the barnack cameras, and the Red Scale version is the best of the in optical quality, as long as it's a good clean example of course.

The later style f3.5 and f2.8 benefit from having an aperture ring and 39mm filter thread, but are that little bit heavier/larger. The later 3.5 is the same as the Red Scale by the way and IMHO a better lens than the 2.8.

However, don't dismiss the Summar. If you're unhappy with the results I would expect that is either because you have a typically poor example (they are often badly marked on the front element and/or hazy) or you're using colour film?

I have a couple of very nice Summars and they give excellent results, but the Red Scale Elmar is a much better lens in general (better colour rendition, more contrast etc.).

Let me add that the Voigtländer 1,5/50 Asph. is also quite a decent lens and well worth considering for a Leica .

If you can live with a lens that is not Leica, I would look into a Canon 50mm f1.8. Lens is not too expensive and is a great shooting lens.

wil lthis fit and focus on my 11f? is hard to get information about this!

Yes, any of the Leica screw mount Canon lenses will fit and focus. I sometimes use a Canon 50/ F1.5 lens on my II, IIIc and IIIf; and have found its' performance excellent (it has been compared favourably with the Zeiss Sonnar of the 1950's). I also have found the Canon 35mm/F2.8 lens to be a great performer. Hope this helps and does not add to the confusion. Regards, David

this is from my summar today. its a little dusty as I rushed it though tonight. its still showing a couple of little light leaks. and flare. and more flare. a lens hood for a start. then maybe a better lens for sure.

Sorry but it looks like you have pinholes in your shutter curtains to me. Lenses don't cause light leaks, well they do of course, that's their purpose, but not the type of light leaks on the image you've shown!

I didnt explain well. yes, its a pinhole problem in the shutter. i guess new curtains are in order. it also seems to have more exposure on the LH side of the image. maybe the curtains are travelling at different speeds? anyone have an opinion on this??

Yes, probably a sign that the shutter isn't running correctly too. I know some have repaired pinholes with paint and sometimes a small patch, but as you have a few holes there I'd advise getting new material fitted along with a general CLA which will sort the shutter issue, and your camera will be good then for many years to come!

I totally agree with James, I've tried tyre paint and found it works (at least for now), but as the shutter is apparently tapering and therefore needs a service; blind replacement is the way to go. May cost a bit more now, but will be cheaper in the long run. Rgds, David

what about the Voightlander 50mm f2.5 color-skopar? anyone have one of these?

EMMA

Hi EMMA

Yes the CV f/2.5 5cm is a modern multi coated lens and very compact, usable with the standard mini hood, the larger hood is better if you can afford/find one. I use one on LTM cameras, on dull days when I need contrast, otherwise an Elmar.

Many summars are suffering from atmospheric decay of the external optical glass, if they are uncoated, pristine ones are rare, any will need a hood.

A new shutter is expensive, the adjustement for 'tapering' (variable exposure across the frame) should be possible by a local camera repair person, new shutter more difficult job, and more expensive. The fabric paint does work but you need to leave it for 24+ hours after application.

I'd recommend you paint and use the camera more to confirm it works ok before sending it to repair person, with a possibly incomplete list of problems.

You do need to cut the 22/23 hole tapered leader, to make film loading easy.

And speaking of C.V. lenses THIS is a beauty! For $649, you can’t beat it. Optically

on par or better than anything.

The Heliar 50 3.5 is indeed a great performer, but the Heliar 50 2.0 is also quite good (although I was skeptical of pushing this design to 2.0), and it is a pleasure to use on a IIIF. The 3.5 is collapsible, but the 2.0 is not. Both are great buys for new lenses.

Hi Tom

The f/2 may use an aspheric element, and both are expensive, even 2nd hand.
