M9ti : baseplate tripod screw-hole strap???

I bought the m9ti as a birthday present for myself and I planed to use the camera. I am not a collector and I put the camera to use.

My problem:

The M9ti does not have any lugs.

The finger loops, which are nice and covered in leather, are very comfortable and usable. My problem is that the connector to the side of the body is not safe. The connector disengaged twice in two weeks and I do not trust it anymore. Once the camera fall on the pavement and the second time on my desk. I suspect the spring is bad.

I do not want to screw any holes in the titanium body for a set of lugs and I decided to secure the finger loops to the screw socket of the baseplate with a cord or something.

I have searched the forum and I found some of the products here, mostly baseplate mounted hand straps: Sniper, LUMA Labs, Gordy.

That brand would you recommend me? What is the most solid and reliable product?

Yevgeny

P.S.

Please do not flame... It a real problem and I do own the m9ti.

The old leather case for the M3 secured to the camera with the tripod socket, and the neck strap was attached to the case. This case will not work on the M9, as the socket is located in a different position, but perhaps you could have one made (Luigi at Leicatime in Italy?).

Unfortunately I cannot think of any half cases with an integrated strap.

I tried cases and they do not work, unfortunately. I have the M neoprene case and it is the only one that fits.

I've tried a tripod screw mounted wrist strap on my M2. It worked loose a couple of times, just from normal use of the camera/strap, almost fell onto concrete but I caught it just as it was becoming detached, and I wouldn't trust carrying a camera by that method again.

Luigi's cases are handmade to size and will fit.

I think the problem here is that the person who designed it and Leica never expected anyone to actually use it for phorography so didn't give any thought to these practicalities. The M9Tit is not a photographer's camera, it's a collector's camera, IMVHO, and it has no business being anywhere but safely inside a glass display cabinet.

Yevgeny,

While I appreciate that you do not wish to "screw any holes in the titanium body for a set of lugs" , that may be the best solution if you want to use the camera as an everyday tool. Why don't you contact Solms, I am quite sure that they can install regular strap lugs, just like they do to the plebeian versions of the M9.

Best,

Jan

Thank you for your suggestion. I have never thought about Solms.:( It could be a good idea. I will think about this.

Thank you. I will look into Luigi cases. BTW I do not like the holster, the camera fits and feels snug, but I'd prefer to have an additional point of connection to my body. I am scared to use it.

Solms was my first reaction, but not to put on lugs, rather to fix the connector that failed, and to repair any damage as a result. They should make the camera functional for normal usage, at no additional charge, despite its probable intended collector audience.

LFI 4/2011, pp 38-42, had an article comparing two different straps that attach to the camera via its tripod socket.

They're a bit unconventional, in that they are designed for street photography, so the photographer can walk without his camera being obvious.

Check out SNIPER-STRAP "THE PRO" - Steel & Bear - by Sun-Sniper and RS-7 R-Strap by BlackRapid.

The BlackRapid R Strap was more comfortable, but the article's author slightly preferred the Sniper-Strap because of its attachment fitting.

Might be worth trying both to see whether your preference is the same, since they're reasonably priced.

Faraz mentions in the linked thread that he uses the finger strap with no problem.

I have no problem with the finger strap, I even like it. My finger strap does not like the Leica's body and tries to escape...:-)

Invent had any personal experience with these straps, but they do seem the only choice. However, I've read some horror stories about the screw coming loose and equipment falling to the floor. I'd just suggest constantly getting into the habit of tightening the screw. My second worry would be making sure the base plate is always attached securely as you're putting some force on that.

It just may be that your attachment spring or clip needs to be changed out; might be worth getting Solms to check it out? also the suggestion for getting standard lugs fitted is probably the most usable.

Just had an idea; if you can find, or get made, a half case that screws into the base and has a strap attached to the case, this would be a good way around the issue!

Good luck,

Edmond

Thank you, Edmond!

My idea was pretty simple. I do not trust one point of attachment to the body. I want to use the finger loops (I think you coined the term?) and, as a security, to add a tripod socket screw and connect all them with a nylon cord.

After a lot of advice here I am looking into other options.

To be honest, I do not want to send the camera to Solms for different reasons. The main reason is that I don't want to part with the camera, she second reason is logistical. I live in Moscow, Russia, the camera was bought in Zurich and I do not know who is in charge of the Leica service here and who will be dealing with the customs and mail.

Thank you,

Yevgeny

Yevgeny,

That's a nice idea actually! Certainly the most elegant solution. Maybe get a leather strap made that can go from the bottom plate to the finger loop?

As far as Solms, I'd just pop into the Leica Store in Moscow and let them deal with things; simple :-) The Leica Store in London has superb service and I'm sure the Moscow one will too. You should be able to loan an M9 whilst you wait.

It's a wonderful camera by the way; it just feels so good in the hand and the look and feel of the lens is just special! I had the joy to be able to review one for my blog.

Good luck,

Edmond
