Hi everyone,

I'm new to Leica world . . I bought my M9 2 month ago along with Summilux 50 Asph.

Today i took my Leica for a street shoot . . i set the image quality on DNG and started shooting . .

@ the 5th frame, the recording red light kept blinking like forever . . I tried to shut it down , no use . . like no use of the shut off dial . .

it took maybe 5 minutes then the camera started to work again , , i previewed the photo and it wan't there . .

Then i started shooting, and every photo i take, when i preview, i cannot see it . .

I formatted the SD card, and still the problem still there . . ..

Now i feel like not trusting the M9 . . it crashes easily . . and embarrass you . .

Then i was angry like, what a piece of crap is this camera!!

My D70 never let me down for more than 7 years , ,never . . until the day it was stolen . . real work horse . .

This is 7k$ for god sake, Leica!!

Now, anyone faced this problem before? what's the solution?

My SD card details:

ScanDisk Ultra 15MB/s

16GB

SDHC

I thought of the SD card is faulty . . and was planning to buy new one tomorrow.

But, hey , , i'm new to all of this . . especially to this forum . .

So i need clear help from you guys rather than making fun . .

Now , , is this problem frequently happening?!! and is it the card problem? if yes, and i wish so, what kind of card that will not have this problem again!

Thanks.

Hi scrubs,

That's an impressive list. Thanks.

I bookmarked it. Now I will read it.

Another interesting tidbit: Leica Camera AG - Downloads

In M9 FAQ is a Leica recommended memory card list, quote:

"Which tpes of memory cards will work with my LEICA M9?

In principle, all cards complying with the SD/SDHC specifcations will work. Since this market with its many distributers changes quickly, Leica cannot constantly check the compatibility. The M9's performance is very much based on the card's speed. Therefore, we suggest using the faster types on the list below containing memory cards checked by Leica.

Type of card

Extrememory 4GB SDHC

hama SDHC 4 GB

Kingston SDHC 4GB class2

Lexar Professional SDHC 4GB 133x class6

Lexar Professional SDHC 8GB 133x class6

Panasonic SDHC 8GB class6

PNY SDHC 8GB

SanDisk Video HD 16GB class4

SanDisk Extreme III SD 2 GB

SanDisk Extreme III SDHC 4 GB

SanDisk Extreme III SDHC 4GB 30 MB/s

SanDisk Extreme III SDHC 8GB 30MB/s

SanDisk SDHC 4GB class2

SanDisk SDHC 8GB class2

SanDisk Ultra II 16GB class4

SanDisk Ultra II SDHC 2GB 15 MB/s

SanDisk Ultra II SDHC 32GB class4

Toshiba 16GB SDHC class4

Toshiba 4GB SDHC class6

Transcend SDHC 16GB class6

Transcend SDHC 1GB

Transcend SDHC 32GB class6

ultron High Speed SD 512MB"

I am using only cards from this list.

Unfortunately that doesn't seem to matter much. Still problems.

Best, K-H.

A pleasure mate. Also just forwarded that list to Leica in case it is any help

for them to determine the problem. I sent another email to them and received

this reply today.

My colleague Birgitta Mielke had forwarded your eMail last Monday to another colleague from Leica Infoline.

I’ve sent a reminder to my colleague to give you support in your case. He’ll answer as soon as possible.

Thank you for your patient and your understanding.

Mit freundlichen Gruessen / kind regards / Cordialement,

It seems there's no solid solution , ,

People are following trial and error method , , by replacing different cards , ,

People are talking about saving DNG+JPEG . . i'm facing problem saving both, DNG or JPEG!!!

Leica has no solid answer to this problem . . as i believe the problem is from Leica not the cards . . . cause Nikon and Canon have no problems with cards .. .

I'm totally disappointed , , And started to regret buying M9.

for what it is worth, the one that failed on me was an Sandisk SDHC 8GB Extreme Pro 45MB/s at £60

I am now using two no name generic cheapo 4GB that came with the camera from the dealer with no problem

and no difference in speed within camera. The Only difference in speed is when transferring files to computer.

Also trying 4GB Sandisk extreme 30MB/s with no problems so far, fingers crossed. I would just go for cheapest

possible until problem gets sorted - with any luck.

Make sure you let Leica know it's our only chance of getting them to do anything about it.

Same here....I've had quite a few dslr's, point and shoots and medium format digital backs and only my M9 has corrupted 3 different Sandisk extreme Pro 32 gb cards. Eleanor

I find it odd that M9 is the only Camera where i have to have these precautions in handling memorycards. I have 2 SLRs and several pointandshooters that have zero problems with memorycards and I can "abuse" the cards as much as i want (switching cards from camera to camera, deleting pictures, etc. )The only camera where I have had any memorycard issues is the M9 and IT has plenty.

I just sent an email on the topic to an acquaintance at Leica US who I thought had a higher position in the company than the customer service and technical support people.

Unfortunately, that person's out-of-office reply reads:

Hello and thank you for your e-mail. Our office will be closed from Friday, December 24th until Monday, January 3rd. Please bear in mind that it might take a few days, for me to catch-up on my return. Thank you in advance

Eleanor,

I Feel your pain and frustration. I have never had a ‘’bad’’ card in anything including

my Leica: ''so something’s going on here but you don’t know what it is-do you, Mr.Jones?’’

One possibility is the fact that phony cards are reaching a high percentage of the market…. I’ve read scary numbers on the percent of phony cards being sold!

And there is no outside way to distinguish them from REAL. Not distributors, not dealers and even SanDisk reps have been fooled.

Ok, what’s the best chance of getting the real thing? What else, see below:

Dear Rip Tragle,

Thank you for ordering from SanDisk on July 9, 2011. Please be advised that the following product(s) has/have shipped and your credit card has now been charged. I also have used a recent vintage 16 MB Ultra Sandisk card and had the same problem. Guess what it had a similar problem at about from 5. Bad card - I think not. Bad source of the card - we must have bought from the same scam artist - NOT. Problem with the M9 software - YA THINK?????

Sorry for the sarcasm, but there is a serious issue with the M9 SD card firmware and Leica should address the problem. Read the other posts/threads. I'll post more in one of those other appropriate threads.
