framestore Posted July 5, 2011 Share #1 Posted July 5, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, In the studio, I'm using Canon 7d and 580exii wirelessly for a portrait. Mertz flash seems good choice for M8. What kind of off-shoe kit, flash or brands do you use with M8?

framestore Posted July 6, 2011 Author Share #4 Posted July 6, 2011 Leica SF58D Thank you. When using SF58D with M8, any downside I must know... I mean does flash would be working fine in full automated ?
framestore Posted July 21, 2011 Author Share #5 Posted July 21, 2011 The Leica SF58D is identical to mecablitz 58 AF-1. It leads me to think SF58D is a re-branded model of Metz and double the price.

I'm sure you are correct. Unfortunately the Metz version lacks Leica dedication. If you want TTL metering on the M8/M9 (not all do) the Leica SF-58 (and SF-24D) seem to be the only choices. BJDrew Posted July 25, 2011 Share #7 Posted July 25, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I use an RF trigger on the camera and either Canon-system strobes or either a beat up LP120 or my father's Sunpak from 1984. You would never know the difference in results. TTL is irritating to me, and getting the strobe off the camera is clutch. My favorite combo is with the 480EX or LP120 for ease of operation, and size. Jase Posted July 27, 2011 Share #9 Posted July 27, 2011 I use Yongnuo YN460ii strobes in the shoe and but have just tried my Canon version Pixel Soldier radio trigger in the hotshoe of the M8 and it fires a remote flash fine. I thought about buying a Metz but when I have three cheap YN460iis that I bought for strobist stuff on my Canon I don't really see the need. Also isn't the Leica use supposed to be totally manual.... TTL indeed.... naughty, naughty

cbretteville Posted October 13, 2011 Share #13 Posted October 13, 2011 I have a Metz 44mz2 with an SCA3502 mod 4 adapter. Works as well as any flash does on an M. Only snag is it doesn't have a swivel head, just tilt. Any Metz flash that can take an SCA3502 mod 4 or later will give you the same functionality as an SF24D. Biggest problem with them is that the balance of the camera is completely off with any flash larger than something like the SD24D. Carl

Carl Carl, they will give functionality in communicating with the camera for setting sync speed and flash reflector zoom, but they will not give GNC or TTL functionality. Only a couple of the very latest flashes will do that, but with limitations. The only flashes that give all options on the M8/8 are the SF24D AND SF58D. An intermediate sized flash is missing. Maybe in a few weeks.
jevidon Posted May 8, 2012 Share #16 Posted May 8, 2012 The Metz 54MZ-4 is what I use. It has interchangeable adapter shoes for several different cameras. The SCA3502 adapter is what I use on my M8u and I get full TTL performance with it. The Nikon SC-28 hot shoe extension cord has identical contacts as the M8 and it also works fine for off camera use.
