...question - isn't it funny how many camera owners do not attach a simple sticker label to the bottom of their cameras? E-mail and/or phone number, in view of the sizable investment that the camera represents. Or is there a reason not to, because I have always done this?

No guarantee of a return, I agree, but you never know,

Could the passenger list be looked at again? Where was it found, what seat, what section, which overhead bin? Notify the airline's legal department to make sure you are doing/ have done all the necessary procedures before donating. Because passengers don't know that donating lost items from the plane is airline policy--and if that policy was not written or was not given to the passengers, airline may have to compensate for the lost items if the passenger takes legal action.

Hey Soelin,

The issue of items left on planes is that the planes fly from city to city all day and each seat could have five to ten different people who have sat in it. Often the reason the items are forgotten is that they may have slid to the back of the overhead bin and the owner didn't see it and neither does anyone else until the groomers clean the plane at the end of the day. Often flights do not fully deplane at a station stop and it’s expected that those remaining guests’ items would remain in the over head bin. At that point the aircraft is possibly (likely) in a completely different part of the country or world for that matter. We work very hard to find the owners of items but it isn't easy and sadly people leave lots and lots of expensive items behind and never claim them. Eventually we do have to draw a line and donate unclaimed items but it's after lots of searching over a pretty long period of time.

In this particular case we will go far beyond to try to find the owner as the camera and lenses are so valuable. You would not believe how many cell phones that have died, ipads / ipods, keys and other items never find their owners. We will often call the manufactures (ipads for instance) to get an owners name so we can link up the name we have on file but the manufacturers often refuse to give us the information. Even cell phones that have died, we will call the provider and they won’t let the owner know that the phone has been located. The reason we eventually donate the items is so that there isn't the perception that we just sat on the item and then someone took it home. No one gets to keep it so we all work hard for the right person to get it back.

Bringing it back to air travel. Always be sure to put your name and contact info (even just an email) inside your bag! Often the tags can get ripped off by the baggage system or the glue delaminates from extreme cold weather and we are left digging through the bag trying to figure out who's it is.

You never think you are going to leave something behind but when you do you may not even realize it's not with you anymore until days or weeks later and you wonder... hey where did that go? by that point you may not have any idea where it is.

I suppose the owner of the camera would know he or she has left the camera on the plane, and he will present a complaint at the airline's offices.

Perhaps I'm missing something here, but why should he/she raise a complaint at the airlines offices??

After all, I'm sure if I was able to afford an M9 + 2 lenses I'd damn well be sure to look after it and not leave it on a plane :D

Well done to 'foundM9' for being so persistent in trying to find this individual

Best wishes

Well, I called Leica today and they had a name of the owner of the camera and the two lenses. I was able to go back through our airline files and track down the owner’s phone number. I gave him a call and it was the right person. So here is the story, he was flying from one city to another and upon arrival he looked in the over head bin and didn’t immediately see his camera. (It may have slid to the other side of the bin during the flight) He immediately thought that he left it in security at the previous city and has been dialoguing with them ever since. My call today was the first contact he’s had with us about his camera. Thanks for all the good tips on how to track down the owner of this camera. :)

We’re looking forward to connecting the guest with their property.

Yes, an exellent result.

Great you were so persistent >> foundM9 <<, you should now give

us the name of your airline. So LEICA-owners could book with more confidence.

Thanks for taking the route you did, coming to the forum. I'm pleased that we were of some help.

What's pathetic in this is that the owner has been trying to find his equipment, and no one in security bothered to check with the airline.

The world needs more people willing to go the extra mile.

Very good move on your part, foundM9! And thanks for the courtesy of telling us the end of the story.

To those who never heard of WestJet - it is a Canadian airline, flying mainly domestic routes and competing vigorously with Air Canada. Their TV adverts always stress great customer service and claim that all WestJet employees are WestJet owners as they actually own a part of the company.

Based on what I read here, this is one of the very few TV ads that I will now believe........

Super story and my hat off to 'foundM9' for the persistence to bring it to a successful end. I guess my next domestic flight will be with WestJet - whether I am travelling with my Leica or without it!

Best,

Jan

foundm9, thank you for going the extra mile, and for coming to the forum for advice. That must be one happy M9 owner there, not to mention the members here who will remember this for a long time. If I ever fly domestic in Canada, WestJet will be the one I fly with.

Well done :), from what I have read about the lengths you went to in finding this man I would really hope that WestJet recognise what an asset you are to the airline also.

Best wishes

Mike
