Bought an M9

No it does not - but putting on a baseplate in the wrong colour does... I can assure you - mine has been back to Solms with a black dot on, and so have my M8s.

I'm sure you are right but given the consequence of screwing my warranty I would really like to get some clarity on this from Leica before changing the dot myself.

I had an M8.2 loaner for nearly a year and got attached the black dot look.

Um... all my cameras have black dots. Not only does it not invalidate my warranty, but CS Solms takes great care to stick them on again when the have to remove them.

Jaap, how were you able to remove the red dot? I have a DAG black dot that I'd like to use instead. DAG said to to twist the red dot back and forth until it came loose, but despite a lot of twisting it won't budge.

Put your thumb on it, twist it to loosen up a bit, get two toothpicks and alternately push against the raised letters left and right It will start to turn more and more and suddenly it will slide off.

The ‘’coating’’ on the M-9 is impervious to lacquer thinner and acetone…. from my

own tests. To remove the white in the logo depression…. just brush on some of this

solvent and the white will disintegrate. It’s also very easy to make a red dot black!

Bummer!! I wished I knew about DAG's black dot earlier. I just spent $85 buying a black dot from eBay's nyliramcam.

Well I have just done the deed - In the end I emailed Solms for clarity and was told (as Jaapv stated) that replacing the dot (taking great care not to damage the range finder adjustment beneath) does not invalidate warranty.

I used Jaapv's method but finally removed the red dot by pulling it off with a piece of Blue Tac.

Sorry, is this a serious thread?

I am thinking to buy an M9. Who bothers about a red dot, who recognizes a Leica?

I want a picture-making machine. The alternative is a 5d2!

Jan

Hi Jan, for some reason my thread turned into a discussion about the black dot. In any case, some people are interested in replacing the dot, because they think it looks nice. I don't see a problem with that.

I do agree with you that a camera is a picture-making-machine in the first place, but hey, I also put tape on my 1Ds Mark III if I take it with me on vacation. Just to make it look less attractive for potential thieves.

Check the threads on the forum about your M9 vs 5D mark II question. They are both very different machines. I wouldn't even consider selling my 1Ds even though the M9 is a great camera. For me both camera's have their own strengths and weaknesses.
