TrimG Posted June 22, 2011 Share #1 Posted June 22, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, I recently inherited my father's Leica M2, which I would dearly love to use, however the viewfinder doesn't work. When I look through the viewfinder I only see one very small image in the centre of the screen. I have never used a Leica before, but I am certain this isn't right! Does anyone have any advice on how I should go about getting this fixed? Or maybe where I should take it (I live in south London). Any advice would be gratefully appreciated. Thank you. With an M2's viewfinder you should be able to look through it and see the scene in front of you, some lines towards the edges, which tell you the view that your particular lens can see, and a patch in the centre of the viewfinder. The patch will probably show an offset view of the centre portion of the scene and when you change the focus ring on your lens you should be able to line up the image on the patch with the image in the scene. When you do that, what's in the patch image will be in focus. If this isn't what's happening then I suggest taking your M2 into Red Dot Cameras in Old Street who will be able to help. Pete. The M2 should be the same (but without the exposure info) i.e. you see the whole viewfinder area, then the framelines and the rangefinder patch in the middle. Are you only able to see the rangefinder patch? I'm not sure how that can happen! If you look from the front of the camera through the large window what do you see. There are two other windows one is opaque the other is very small, if you look through the very small window from the front what do you see. There is are a pair of prisms behind the large window they are glues together with a translucent glue, if they separate (from storage conditions or shock,) the viewfinder wont work properly. This can be repaired or replaced, but either is expensive, the repair is preferable.
