an "aps-c sized sensor" - at least Leica is through toying with m4/3 format inspite of the

recent 25mm lens announcement. What would it take to change the mount on the

video lenses to create a whole new family of interchangeable Leica optics? The autofocus

mechanics are available along with image stabilization - perhaps the only positive legacy

from the 4/3 stuff - and if the price is right, mass production could help keep costs in line.

It won't be a Leica M by a long shot Autofocus? APS-C? Are you aware of the horrible difficulties of focusing c-mount and any other manual lens is for live-view? All you are asking for is just another run-of-the mill Asian product like the Lumix with a larger sensor and the associated film-to-sensor difficulties. Ain't gonna happen.Do the math.

I love the M but this does look like an exciting new camera. A while to wait, though. I am not too concerned what lenses it uses; they will all be superb. From the design point of view, I would welcome compact size, really simple ergonomic control with no clutter (shutter speed dial, aperture ring on the lenses, perhaps a real ISO dial), simple menu, big clear viewfinder (whatever type), fast AF speed, and of course, brilliant image quality. Oh, and not a crazy price. Not a lot to ask, now, surely? :)

The format covered by C mount lens is a lot smaller tham 4/3, never mind APS-C, if you search the internet or 4/3 forums you will find plenty of experience, they vignette like hell!

The Summilux-C lenses are PL-mount, not C-mount, and I don't see any reason to doubt their claim to cover the full 35mm ciné frame without vignetting.

There seems to be some confusion here between small (image circle and size) c-mount video/cine lenses and Leica's new Summilux-C lenses.

As John says above, Summilux-C's are manual PL mount cinema lenses designed to cover the S35 cinema format, which approximates to APS-C/H in the stills world (although longer focal length PL lenses may have an image circle large enough to cover stills FF35mm).

Whilst the Summiluxes can be considered 'compact' when compared to traditional PL cine lenses (Zeiss, Cooke etc), with a 95mm front diameter they are big in comparison to most stills lenses.

After all... I think it won't be 24x36 : I see two big problems :

1) Compactness : is it possible to make a FF EVIL smaller than a M9 ?

2) Lenses : AF (almost sure), zoom (probable, imho), interchangable ("system camera") : can be made rather compact if designed to cover 24x36 and with the IQ one expects from Leica ?

So... I continue to think that the best option wold be APS-H - 18x27 : a small plus on the "crowd" of APS-C and a format that "sounds fine" for the heritage of M8 and DMR: a pair of zooms and 1-2 "prestige primes" from the start ... lens line to evolve depending on success.

Alternatively : APS-C ----> evolution of X1, with EVIL and interchangable lenses.

No, because that would (a) make the body much bulkier and (B) be incompatible with floating-element and long-focal-length lenses.

I agree.. and also mjh (who I consider a very trustable guy) excluded this option...

but (and this is just a speculation, not related to this specific camera)... I wonder if it has sense to imagine a system in which a LIMITED (3-5mm around) movement of the sensor could be combined with a traditional mirror or EVF focus action for a sort of "AF fine tuning" or "focus confirmation"...... dunno if anyone has ever thoght of such a system...

I see a lot of wishlist rumination on this camera, but would suggest approaching this question in terms of its position vs. the other Leica lines, and Leica's approach to camera systems... carefully thinking through the user / photographic experience.

Too many of the proposed features I've read leave me scratching my head, given that the M system is their flagship line. I doubt they will build this system in order to provide a watered down experience for those of us with M or even R lenses, or to satisfy those of us who want an M9 but cannot have one.

List of things I would not hold my breath for:

-A system amounting to a digital bastardization of the M philosophy

-Any serious focus on providing legacy lens support

-A manual focus-centric system. Anticipate AF being primary, MF secondary

-Lenses that appear to rival or surpass M or S glass

-A very wide range of lenses, particularly specialty focal lengths

-A full frame sensor. Sorry for the bad news

-A totally revolutionary concept

-A proprietary system that will become the market leader

Leica would be incredibly smart to make this APS-C camera use a standard Micro4/3 lens mount and to manufacture a new line of auto-focus lenses to go with it. They could then cash in on the M4/3 lens market, selling to all the Panasonic and Olympus users, as well as create a new market for their own M and R lenses by supplying adapters for each of those lines.

I'd hope for an integrated EVF.

Out of all the maybes I like this one the most :)

(my dream? a M8 with a highISO chip and a big, fast buffer)
