jsrockit Posted June 22, 2011 Share #21 Posted June 22, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Why not accept M-mount lenses ? . . . this camera body is not in competition with the M9 & Leica will make money on every M-mount lens it sells to someone who buys the new camera. Why not do that? In fact, allowing the use of M-lenses would entice new users into Leica without the exclusive cost of the M9. It would also be a backup to the M9 for some pro's. Leica M lenses are already scarce... and don't forget Leica is not a huge consumer electronics manufactuer. They cannot just simply train someone to make lenses over a month or two. That means they have limited staff which probably couldn't keep up with demand if it were to increase. Whatever system comes about, do not count on it being cheap (it will be a Leica after all)... whatever people have in their minds about price, tack on $1000-2000 more and you'll get the real price most likely. Perhaps they will have someone else build their lenses for this unit. Perhaps they will work on it in conjunction with another company.

macjim Posted June 22, 2011 Share #23 Posted June 22, 2011 I, for one, am looking forward to next years Photokina to see what this new camera system Leica will bring out. If its a aps-c sensor, then I'm very interested as it will give a better quality image rather than going down the micro 4/3 & 4/3 size sensors. Yeah, it's not a M9 but unfortunately for many of us, the M9 is a lottery win away. Cheers, Macjim.
stunsworth Posted June 22, 2011 Share #24 Posted June 22, 2011 Is there an "X2 v X100" thread yet? Looks like this could be the 'R' solution promised so long ago
cbretteville Posted June 22, 2011 Share #25 Posted June 22, 2011 Pretty much all the EVIL cameras out there take R lenses if you spring for an adapter; I would be surprised if the new system did not. But it isn’t meant to be a revival of the R system, i.e. it won’t support R lenses natively, if only because R lenses don’t support AF. It would be sweet if an electro mechanical interface could be built into an R-adapter that would allow for automatic stopping down of the aperture with feedback to and control from the camera through the cam(s). Should be in theory be doable. Carl
Paul Reading Posted June 22, 2011 Share #26 Posted June 22, 2011 An APS-C camera with an integral EVF + interchangeable lenses . . . isn't that just what the X1 crowd has been asking for? Why not accept M-mount lenses ? . . . this camera body is not in competition with the M9 & Leica will make money on every M-mount lens it sells to someone who buys the new camera. Why not do that? In fact, allowing the use of M-lenses would entice new users into Leica without the exclusive cost of the M9. It would also be a backup to the M9 for some pro's. Anyway, we have much time to further speculation. Because you lose the ability to miniaturise. The CSC market is attractive for people who do not want to lug around a big heavy camera but are attracted by the control, look and "proper"fast lenses. jmooney Posted June 22, 2011 Share #27 Posted June 22, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I for one am now looking forward to the sudden glut of used X1's on the used market next August. This looks intriguing, I hope they stick true to the idea of an APS sensor and stay as far away from the u4/3rd stuff as possible.
mjh Posted June 22, 2011 Share #28 Posted June 22, 2011 Why not accept M-mount lenses ? . . . this camera body is not in competition with the M9 & Leica will make money on every M-mount lens it sells to someone who buys the new camera. Why not do that? In fact, allowing the use of M-lenses would entice new users into Leica without the exclusive cost of the M9. I doubt Leica would see the new system as a vehicle for selling M lenses – they could sell more than they can manufacture as it is. And those lenses will still be quite expensive; if you cannot afford an M body, most likely you cannot afford those lenses either. On the other hand an EVIL body supporting M lenses (if through an adapter) could play the role of a modern day Visoflex or (as you had already mentioned) as a backup. sblitz Posted June 22, 2011 Share #29 Posted June 22, 2011 are prices for r lenses now rising? might be worth buying a few and a leicaflex for a year and then swapping into mirrorless next year. any leicaflex standout as better than another?
earleygallery Posted June 22, 2011 Share #30 Posted June 22, 2011 Looks like this could be the 'R' solution promised so long ago Certainly sounds like it is whatever camera they had in mind when they spoke of the 'R solution' camera - but remember they also said that such a camera wouldn't be made by Leica......is this another Panasonic collaboration? Would make a lot of sense if so (PanaLeica AF lenses etc).
daveleo Posted June 22, 2011 Share #31 Posted June 22, 2011 I doubt Leica would see the new system as a vehicle for selling M lenses – they could sell more than they can manufacture as it is. And those lenses will still be quite expensive; if you cannot afford an M body, most likely you cannot afford those lenses either. I am not going to argue too strongly, as that would imply that I had a clue about all of this, but I was thinking that if L made a wildly successful small APS camera with an M-mount, and if they own the patent on the M-mount, they would get income from every lens maker who made a lens for this new popular camera. Truth be told, I simply have too much idle time on my hands today.
vonheim Posted June 22, 2011 Share #32 Posted June 22, 2011 FYI Leica to launch a new compact mirrorless system camera at Photokina 2012 | Leica News & Rumors It is said, and quoting Mr Schopf and MR Kaufman, that a Leica with EVF and APS-C sensor will be announced at Photokina 2012. The system will be compatible with R lenses. Hopefully this is true, and hopefully it will please many on this forum. Cheers, Knut PS! 250swb Posted June 22, 2011 Share #33 Posted June 22, 2011 Well let me guess. Panasonic are on course to deliver a new GF4 after all the permutations of its parts bin have been exhausted with the 'introductory' model GF3. As such its likely to be their next high end GF camera and on the product line for a couple of years like the GF1 has been. I would bet that Leica's new camera will be a badged and fettled version of the Panasonic GF4 (or whatever its called when released). Steve
Guest stnami Posted June 22, 2011 Share #34 Posted June 22, 2011 Fantastic news from Leica...................... this will keep the punters amused for the next 12 months. No need to produce anything new just a couple of revamped Pana products and the M9 variations ..........sorta kills it all for any X2 expectations etc........a great move Leica, keep that CL R lens version myth alive:D

jrc Posted June 22, 2011 Share #37 Posted June 22, 2011 I've got a feeling that Panasonic is going to be in the mix somewhere...and if Panasonic is involved, I doubt that this camera will be particularly compact -- a really compact Leica could do some damage to Panasonic's very successful m4/3 program. I suspect we'll see something that resembles the Pentax K5 (which is quite compact, but notably larger than m4/3.) If the sensor quality is comparable to the M9 quality, and if there's a line of compact Leica-quality lenses (the size of the Pentax pancakes or even somewhat larger than those) I could well be in the market for this camera. It would be competing head-to-head with the Canon and Nikon APS-C entries, and their systems; in which case, compactness and quality will be critical. mmradman Posted June 22, 2011 Share #38 Posted June 22, 2011 Mirrorless APS-C is no big deal, Sony and Samsung already have models for sale. Both are already compatible with R lenses via third party adapters. What Leica bosses said is intriguing "at least APS-C" hinting at bigger than AP-C. Current M8/M9 is mirrorless already, all it takes is to swap CCD with CMOS and fit EVF instead of optical RF. Easy said than done though as few serious tweaks will be needed, first being sourcing EVF fitting of Leica quality. Providing they deliver FF CSC (compact system camera) I will buy. wildlightphoto Posted June 22, 2011 Share #39 Posted June 22, 2011 Providing they deliver FF CSC (compact system camera) I will buy. I would be interested too if it's as responsive as an R8 (better would be as responsive as an SL). APS-C does not interest me.
mjh Posted June 22, 2011 Share #40 Posted June 22, 2011 I would bet that Leica's new camera will be a badged and fettled version of the Panasonic GF4 (or whatever its called when released). Andreas Kaufmann is on record saying that Leica will “do things differently” (than Panasonic, Olympus, Samsung, and Sony) and Alfred Schopf said that the sensor will be APS-C at least (remember when Leica had said that the sensor of their new, still unannounced DSLR would be 36 x 24 mm “or more” and in the end the sensor of the S2 measured 45 x 30 mm?). Micro-FourThirds it isn’t, that much is obvious. Also a re-badged product wouldn’t be an example of doing things differently, so the hints given suggest a product designed from the ground up by Leica. That doesn’t preclude a cooperation, be it with Panasonic or some other vendor. Since Panasonic shows no ambition to go beyond Micro-FourThirds they may actually be less likely as a partner, at least as far as the sensor is concerned.
