jsrockit Posted June 20, 2011 Share #41 Posted June 20, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I had this happen to me before the firmware update with a Sandisk Ultra II 16gb card... and it is a problem with the card and not the camera. I returned my card for a new one.

Alnitak Posted June 20, 2011 Share #44 Posted June 20, 2011 Sorry, this is off topic, but: it is better but not healed and I have always used the 21/2.8 pre-asph setting Yeah, the firmware is not enough to fix the 15mm. The 12mm is now almost perfect when coded as the 21/2.8 pre-ASPH.
silverlight99 Posted June 21, 2011 Share #45 Posted June 21, 2011 Late to this thread, but I had this problem happen twice (when saving DNG+JPG fine), once recently after the firmware update ("lost"/never recorded about 20 photos); also occurred during the beta test of the firmware. Included a couple freezes that required a battery pull / power recycle. Using a 16GB Sandisk Extreme (current version).
k-hawinkler Posted June 21, 2011 Author Share #46 Posted June 21, 2011 Many thanks. I appreciate your feedback. I wonder how many folks save DNG & JPG fine as a standard practice. I certainly don't and stumbled on this issue almost by accident. Comparing in camera generated JPGs with the ones generated in PS CS5, it's obvious the former don't measure up, even when using manual WB. Leica needs to address this image saving issue, but with fairly low priority from my point of view. Much more important is IMHO to have the scroll wheel and arrows working correctly at all times and preventing the M9 from freezing up. The latter happened on my M9 only with the new FW. Of course, the various issues may have the same root cause. Best, K-H.
IkarusJohn Posted June 21, 2011 Share #47 Posted June 21, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks for the warning, K-H. I have the same card, was using the same settings, and now that i think of it, some shots were missing from a trip I did on the weekend to the Auckland Art Gallery (under construction). As mentioned above, the III designation was dropped by SanDisk. Your Extreme 16GB card is (or was) the latest. Mine has worked flawlessly since I got in in October last year. I have turned off the DNG & JPEG Fine setting - now just doing DNG. Cheers John
barjohn Posted June 21, 2011 Share #48 Posted June 21, 2011 Has there ever been another camera where the SD card is blamed for so many of its problems? The interface to the SD cards is obviously poorly engineered and operating at the edge of the specifications or there wouldn't be so many problems. Any P&S you pick up will work perfectly with a large range of SD cards. I have owned a lot of cameras and the Ms have been the only ones that have had this issue. Albert Andersen Posted June 21, 2011 Share #50 Posted June 21, 2011 Hi. After updating the firmware to the latest version the camera stopped to function after a few exposures. It was impossible to turn the camera off – I have to remove the battery. The card used was SanDisk Extreme Pro. It is now impossible to buy Extreme III. The dealers says it is replaced by the Pro version. I have an old Leica SD card (64MB). It works and the M9 works as normal. I tried once more with the Pro card, and it is impossible to use or to turn the camera off. Is it a firmware fail, a camera/card reader fail or??????????? PS. Have tryed with another Extreme Pro card with the same bad result. Albert
250swb Posted June 21, 2011 Share #51 Posted June 21, 2011 Steve, Thanks. Why is that a user error? Where in the user manual is that activity outlawed? Best, K-H. Its user error because I know what causes it. Its like relieving the pain caused by banging your head against a brick wall by stopping doing it. jaques Posted June 21, 2011 Share #52 Posted June 21, 2011 it's strange I only ever used the cheapest cards available from my post office for a few dollars.... and I never had a card problem. Only problem I had was with a SanDisk I bought in Thailand- I think it may have been a fake.

Generally avoidance of a problem like this is referred to as a work around, not user error. My work around is described here http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/1741343-post31.html. Best, K-H. k-hawinkler Posted June 21, 2011 Author Share #56 Posted June 21, 2011 So buy a Lexar.... Jaap, I like better your previous observation/suggestion, namely http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/1741276-post22.html. That's my next purchase: 16 GB Ultra II. These cards are inexpensive, recommended by Leica in FAQ, and still available. As always, thanks for your words of wisdom. Best, K-H.
otto.f Posted June 21, 2011 Share #57 Posted June 21, 2011 Don't empty your card with the computer, but ONLY by formatting in the camera is an advice from Jaap in the FAQ
250swb Posted June 21, 2011 Share #58 Posted June 21, 2011 Steve, Generally avoidance of a problem like this is referred to as a work around, not user error. Its both, I use a work around, but when I don't its because I make the error of simply forgetting the M9 is a camera with a very small brain. You can't just keep on blaming the camera for its inherent characteristic's. Its not a high end Canon with a massive buffer, its a unique small camera with a FF sensor and plenty of other characteristic's that make it a terrific camera to use. Steve I'm used to fiddling around with Kodak DCS SLR/n and 14n cameras. Almost the same thing....a full frame, almost hand assembled camera with a quirky sensor with no AA filter, VERY fussy and sensitive to the card media, randomly rejects or freezes with certain cards, inexplicable data loss, camera malfunctions, etc. But they produce gorgeous, unbeatable image files when properly babied.
