mby Posted June 18, 2011 Share #241 Posted June 18, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Agreed... The list of updates is pretty terse, but I'd think they'd at least mention something like this. Though vendors have "snuck in" changes in the past, so called "quiet tweaks." Reminds me of the "OMG, high ISO is better!" response after an M8 firmware update in the past... Maybe that's to M9's frimware updates what Safari's increased snappiness is to MacOS updates ever since: Can somebody explain to me the whole "Safari seems snappier" thing??? - MacRumors Forums Best, Michael

anneandwayne Posted June 18, 2011 Share #242 Posted June 18, 2011 I only have a 75mm Summarit as well, and I haven't seen any issues with it; however, just going back through others that I took today, it does seem that it is appearing on the photographs taken with the white balance set to cloudy, but not on those set to daylight. In addition it looks as if it is stongest on the bottom edge of the picture (when taken horizontally). I am experianceing the same magenta cast with the 35mm summicron. Most noticable at f2 and in the lower corners. In all cases RAW files, auto WB, as viewed in Lightroom. Is it possible to locate and reload the previous firmware? dwbell Posted June 18, 2011 Share #243 Posted June 18, 2011 I was one of only a few who had red edge on my 35 cron. I decided to wait for the rumoured fix in firmware rather than send it in to Solms and be without. The update does thus far seem to have dramatically improved the issue. Non-factual improvements I've noticed include snappier performance, increase in overall exposure and slightly less "normal" vignetting at f/2. The later two could be explained by the red edge fix as the Corner Fix software also gave that appearance too (even without the option to fix luminance vignetting on). thighslapper Posted June 18, 2011 Share #244 Posted June 18, 2011 K-H - I see no reason why you couldn't do this. At the moment in LR you only get the 135 focal length - Adobe haven't been told the specific lens name by Leica as yet, so that level of Exif isn't available for the moment.Best just checking before I start grinding..... coded as 53 = 110101 (or BBWBWB) ???? can you look and see what malcolm has coded yours as..... ta ! Rick Posted June 18, 2011 Share #246 Posted June 18, 2011 Goncalo, I also have the WATE and have not detected a red edge problem with this lens. I am extremely happy with the WATE and plan on using it for 3 weeks in Europe this summer and I don't want to create any new problems. I appreciate your report, because I wanted to wait and hear what problems this update created before I decided to download it to my M9. Because right now I have no problems with my wides (WATE, 28Cron, 35 LUX FLE, 35 Cron). Could you post a picture with the red center blob, please. Thanks for your report on the WATE. It will be interesting to see the posts on other lenses over the next few weeks. Rick For the record: I went back through and reviewed the last year and a half of pictures from my M9 + WATE. It does indeed red edge and green on the right after all. It is only possible to detect on a few pictures. It is very color temperature and subject dependent. It is not even close to the degree of some of the problem lenses I have seen posted on LUF. I just got done shooting a white card outside and under tungsten light. Hard to detect outdoors, but easily seen under tungsten. So, it is true that I haven't really detected the problem with the WATE, but it is misleading to imagine that it isn't present. I guess I'll update and I'll shoot the card again and try to report back. I'll try and get a before and after file to post. EDIT: Also, this makes me suspect of other reports that some owners don't have the problem with their particular copy of the M9 and certain lenses. I know some see differences between their two copies of M9's, but I now believe the problem is more homogenous between all M9's.
Ben Marks Posted June 18, 2011 Share #247 Posted June 18, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I updated my M9 without incident a moment ago and while I have only slapped two lenses on it I can report. ZM 21/4.5 will still need Cornerfix. ZM 25/2.8 coded as 24 f/2.8 ASPH 11878/11898 looks great. A little fall-off at the corners, but no red edge that I will need to address. (Maybe after some pixel peeping I will update). BTW: I have the zipped file M9-1_138 on my desktop from a prior upgrade. It is about 4.3 MB zipped. Don't know if it will do anyone any good. Any way to post this to the forum?
Rick Posted June 18, 2011 Share #248 Posted June 18, 2011 WATE - Updated to the ver.1.162 firmware and reshot the white card under tungsten lighting and the red edge is much improved. I believe that now in normal photos it would be difficult to identify except, in only the most extreme situations. But, if you want to get picky, the left is slightly warm and the right it slightly green. Very minor from my point of view. Also, there is no purple or red blob in the center that was reported earlier on this thread by a poster that updated their firmware and used the WATE. I just don't see that at all. Final verdict: Recommend update for WATE, no problems, much, much improved. Nice job Leica and thank you.
Ben Marks Posted June 19, 2011 Share #249 Posted June 19, 2011 FWIW, the new firmware I uploaded makes the C/V 21/4 , 24/4 and the Zeiss 21/2.8 quite usable on the M9 without the need for Cornerfix (mostly, see below). The ZM 21/4.5 still needs some help though. I just ran some quick test shots with the following lenses wide open. C/V 15/4.5 (M-mount, LTM 2 samples, identical result. Still needs Cornerfix) C/V 21/4 (fine) !! C/V 24/4 (fine) !! ZM 21/2.8 (a _very_ little green edge-I shot a white wall in the shade o/w hard to notice. In general, I will not be correcting this) ZM 21/4.5 (still needs cornerfix) ZM 25/2.8 (fine) Leica 28/2.8 (fine) Leica 35/2 v. IV (fine) ZM 35/2 (fine) ZM 35/2.8 (fine) Both vignetting and red-edge appear _very_ well controlled. I know that some have had issues with the firmware update but mine went very smoothly, and I have to say, the camera is much more useful with these wides. Leica gets a very big thumbs up from me for the improvement. Loved the camera before. Over the moon about just using the wides. Ben
chris_tribble Posted June 19, 2011 Share #250 Posted June 19, 2011 http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/customer-forum/187141-owners-brand-new-apo-telyt-m.htmlhttp://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/186741-just-got-my-apo-135mm-today.html I think it's a good idea to have Chris verify the 6-bit code. K-H. Unusually I didn't bring the lens with me for this trip - not back in the UK until 25th June. Can someone else help? Best,
ShotCapture Posted June 19, 2011 Share #251 Posted June 19, 2011 Download the file again from Leica's site, format your card in the camera if it still does that, otherwise in the computer, then unzip the file and put the .upd file on the card in the root ( that is next to the DCIM folder, not in it (if you formatted in the camera)) or just on the card if you had to do so in the computer, and reinsert the card in the camera. Do wait the three seconds before hitting "yes" I tried the above with the result of the same error message. I bought a new card reader. No improvement. ShotCapture Posted June 19, 2011 Share #252 Posted June 19, 2011 That happened to me before as well. What I did us I wrote to Leica software support and in less than a day they send me the unzipped file (.upd) which is simply clicked and dragged into the memory card icon. That worked. I have emailed Leica. Thanks. (Thanks also to JAAPV for earlier help)
lars_bergquist Posted June 19, 2011 Share #253 Posted June 19, 2011 I can report that the Zeiss ZM 18mm f:4 too (coded as a pre-ASPH 21mm Elmarit, via a bayonet change) is now about as good as my ZM 25mm, that is perfectly OK. I did not really expect this. The old man from the Age of the Hologon
Adam H Posted June 19, 2011 Share #254 Posted June 19, 2011 Next problem I have downloaded, unzipped but when I insert the card into the M9 and switch back on nothing happens, no prompt? Any ideas? Adam
M. Valdemar Posted June 19, 2011 Share #255 Posted June 19, 2011 Next problem I have downloaded, unzipped but when I insert the card into the M9 and switch back on nothing happens, no prompt? Any ideas? Adam User error. 1) Put SD card in SD card reader. 2) Erase everything on above mentioned SD card by dragging all files and folders to trash or recycling bin, then DELETE ALL FILES FROM TRASH. 3) Look at your downloaded and unzipped file. Make sure the file ends in ****.upd and not ****.zip or anything other than upd. 4) Drag upd file onto blank card, NOT into any folder. 5) Take SD card out of reader, put in camera. If you follow these instructions EXACTLY and don't try any embellishments, it will work. (read the downloaded file by RIGHT CLICK with mouse. Your OS might hide the extension, so you might be naming file ****.upd.upd by accident since you don't see the extension, and it won't work.) If you can't follow these directions, ask a 9 year old kid.
vonheim Posted June 19, 2011 Share #256 Posted June 19, 2011 That is very interesting. Tested the Summicron 35/2 asph yesterday and found almost perfect correction. The design of the Summicrons are the same, the firmware is the same (1.162). Only two variables left: the M9 body and the user. So please check that you have used auto lens coding if your summicron is coded or that you have set it manually. Can you show an example? I would suspect subject and lighting may affect the issue, too
Adam H Posted June 19, 2011 Share #257 Posted June 19, 2011 Many thanks, worked this time. Only thing I did differently was drag rather than cut and paste. Adam
kanuck Posted June 19, 2011 Share #258 Posted June 19, 2011 Damn, so Ben Marks you still need cornerfix for the Voigt 15mm even with the new firmware? Thats too bad I was hoping for the best there, but then again 15mm is insanely wide. What are manually coding the lens as? 16, 18 or 21 WATE?
jaapv Posted June 19, 2011 Share #259 Posted June 19, 2011 I tried mine out today, and even if there is some residual red edge (and there is), it has been reduced so much that you don't really need Cornerfix any more.It can be taken care of in normal PP (for instance the correction brush in ACR). Coded as Elmarit 21.
jaapv Posted June 19, 2011 Share #260 Posted June 19, 2011 I tried the above with the result of the same error message. I bought a new card reader. No improvement. Make sure that you use the .upd file, not the .zip file. And don't try to unzip an .upd file a second time, if your computer has already done so automatically.
