To me it seems that zoomed previews of high iso shots have less chromatic noise... Maybe it's the "effetto panacea" :D

I may well be mistaken here, but I'd imagine if there were other issues they'd addressed in the update they would have mentioned them. I wouldn't expect them to mention the Italian translation improvements but not mention things like this, and the start-up times.

Agreed... The list of updates is pretty terse, but I'd think they'd at least mention something like this. Though vendors have "snuck in" changes in the past, so called "quiet tweaks."

Reminds me of the "OMG, high ISO is better!" response after an M8 firmware update in the past... :D

Well they didn't tell us about the code reading of the apo 135/3.4 they sneaked in either.

OK thanks, I didn't know that. Strange, isn't it? Maybe there will be some more pleasant surprises then!

Use of the term "top level" by Leica should have been "root directory" and telling someone that the top level is what you see when when you "double click" on the card get's one looking at the DCIM folder. As mjh pointed out it may have been clearer if Leica had simply said to drag the file to the card and not into any files on the card.

People doing customer support are always in the difficult position of having to first determine the level of familiarity with the subject, device, what have you, of the customer requesting assistance and then pitching a response to that level.

Don't agree with the latter:

It's a simple test: can someone, who doesn't know what I know, understand my instructions?

Those who can imagine another person as if it was themselves - sorry, that's unusual. Maybe it's just laziness (it's for me to know, for you to find out) but I suspect that writing good instructions requires conceptual thinking.

Anyone who's assembled flat pack furniture, let alone tried to follow a software manual, knows that's rare.

Back on track: anyone else using a 15mm f/2.8? My guess is that given the lukewarm response to the 12mm profile, I may be disappointed. (Can't test it myself. Left the lens in Russia).

I successfully got my up date into the camera BUT Now my M9 says "the update file is incompatible with your camera. Then it goes blank. After a wait I can get it to ask me if I want to update again, but YES produces the same result. Help please.

Again, I''m on XP pro.

In my past life, I did computer support. Trust me, he speaks the truth. I wouldn't wish this job on anyone. No wonder we outsource it all. ;)

I read in an article some time ago that the most common question asked on the UK PC World helpline was " where is the Any Key "

Brian:)

Download the file again from Leica's site, format your card in the camera if it still does that, otherwise in the computer, then unzip the file and put the .upd file on the card in the root ( that is next to the DCIM folder, not in it (if you formatted in the camera)) or just on the card if you had to do so in the computer, and reinsert the card in the camera. Do wait the three seconds before hitting "yes"

Variation between the sensors of different M9 bodies remains open to investigation, but I don't think that the variation between lenses of the same type (for instance a summicron 35/2.0) can be responsible for reported differences: the tolerances of fabrication are so tight, that the bundle of incoming rays can hardly vary between lenses of the same type.

Furthermore: The problem with forum reported results is that many things may vary among which the M9 bodies. It would be very interesting to have 5 M9 bodies available and leave all factors the same during testing.

Could it be that the sensors of some more extensively used M9's cause the variations versus, say, a slightly used M9? I doubt it's the lens.

That happened to me before as well. What I did us I wrote to Leica software support and in less than a day they send me the unzipped file (.upd) which is simply clicked and dragged into the memory card icon. That worked.

Can any of the beta testers perhaps shed some light on this?

I can confirm:

1/ the Apo-Telyt 135 is now recognised automatically if you have a mount that is coded (mine was machined by Malcolm Taylor). Leica informed me that this would happen some months ago but I didn't comment until now because of the NDA. I was delighted as I'd been banging on about this for years. Interested to see if they now start to offer new lenses with coded mounts.

2/ my understanding is that a LOT of work went into improving overall performance (start up / write times and the like.

I think it's also fair to say I was very impressed by the way in which Leica responded to feedback during the beta testing process. It was thorough. While I know that non-Leica lens users may have been hoping for me, overall, I think they've done a good job.

Chris,

Congratulations and thanks for the 6-bit code for the APO-Telyt 135.

You certainly have been vocal about that issue for some time.

Too bad there isn't a 6-bit code for the Tele-Elmat 135/4 - or is there?

Now, couldn't I use the APO code and use it on the TE?

Then, at least I would have a 135mm Exif marking with the correct frame lines - it seems.

All on auto of course.

Best, K-H.

K-H - I see no reason why you couldn't do this. At the moment in LR you only get the 135 focal length - Adobe haven't been told the specific lens name by Leica as yet, so that level of Exif isn't available for the moment.

Best

Problems with Firmware upgrade.....I loaded the new Firmware what i thought was successfully, WHen i go into the Menu on my M9 it references the new Firmware, However, under "Info" i notice my all my lens say Uncoded. Now i find out that i cannot take any picture at all, The shutter will not fire....Anyone else having problems or suggestions?

My M9 after update also said uncoded lens so I removed the lens and reconected it and its now fine.
