Falstaff Posted June 15, 2011 Share #22 Posted June 15, 2011 Lars has the best advice...that I also frequently provide here...use your preview lever. Only you know how you like to frame. Go out with your camera, frame subjects you find interesting, and see what frame lines suit your needs and preferences. And, remember to use your feet in the process. My preferences (or others') shouldn't matter. Terms like landscape, street, portrait, etc. have no universal meaning in terms of FOV. But, FWIW (not much), the only M focal lengths I own (by choice, not by financial constraint), are 28,35 and 50. And this is after several decades of using film and digital Ms, on both cropped and uncropped cameras. Works for me. Wouldn't work for many. Jeff Agree with all this. I too have the 28/35/50/75 and use them all as they are different. Falstaff
Xmas Posted June 15, 2011 Share #23 Posted June 15, 2011 Do you recommend the rectangular one or the smaller square one (both are double axis)? I use a double shoe adapter with shoe finder and the CV angled level.. Noel
NZDavid Posted June 15, 2011 Share #24 Posted June 15, 2011 24mm lens = 84º FOV. 28mm lens = 76º FOV. 35mm lens = 63º FOV. Those few degrees in coverage do make quite a difference. For the three areas you mention, I'd go wider.

IkarusJohn Posted June 16, 2011 Share #26 Posted June 16, 2011 ok so the 28mm f2.8 it is!! Good choice. The 50/1.4 and 28/2 currently live in my bag with my M9. I think you'll have a great time with the 28/2.8. Cheers John

ramosa Posted June 16, 2011 Share #28 Posted June 16, 2011 Lens choice is so personal. On an M9, I would want no wider than 35mm. So it'd be 35-50-90.

j. white Posted June 16, 2011 Share #30 Posted June 16, 2011 I am one of those people who find they can shoot 85% of everything that interests them with either a 35mm or 50mm lens. You may be one too.
Paul Verrips Posted June 16, 2011 Share #31 Posted June 16, 2011 I use 28/50/90. 50 lux is my standard lens, i prefer shooting street & daily life. I did not choose 35 one year ago because it could be to close to 50 (you can use footzoom), but now i have my first Leica for almost one year (M9) i've found out that my style changes. The footzoom is not wat i prefer shooting street, the 28 is OK for landscape and now i have ordered a 35 lux to complete the range. I think you maybe want both after a while. dickgrafixstop Posted June 16, 2011 Share #32 Posted June 16, 2011 sold the 50, bought the 35. added a 75 if I'd kept the 50, I'd add the 28 Next lens is the 24 Then the 90 "a good plan, violently executed today is better than a perfect plan tomorrow" George Patton

wda Posted June 16, 2011 Share #37 Posted June 16, 2011 So I have an M9 with a cron 50mm. Looking to get another lens and am stuck between 28mm cron and 35mm. What you guys think? I would mostly be looking to shoot some street, landscapes and architecture with this lens and am just not sure which one to go for. What you guys think and why? One of the best and cheapest ways to assess the utility of different focal lengths is to go out with your 50 lens fitted; choose a situation where alternative views/perspectives can be considered and set the appropriate frame lines in your finder. Change location/situation and repeat. Change location/situation and repeat once more. Then consider how you could solve the framing problem by walking to and from your subject. You will soon get a positive feeling about your next choice of lens.
myshkine Posted June 16, 2011 Share #38 Posted June 16, 2011 I also struggled for some time hesitating between 28 and 35. Bought an Elmarit 28 (new) in the end, and now - as others - am considering a used 35 (I already own a Summicron 50). I saw a number of Summilux 35 on Internet shops and on EBay. Did not read much about that lens here. Any advice?
