Welcome to the forum !

No much to add to the previous answer... :o... if you are really interested to the Leica world, this a right place to go, and you'll find many nice people... who, in general, like to go straight on the topic when the argument is clear : yours is... forget about the above items... nothing to share with Leicas.

Wow... Thanks for the info. How can you tell they are fakes? We found these among my father in laws belongings along with many Russian cameras. I'm sending everything to KEH for review.

You got it ;)... one more russian camera... hundreds (probably thousands) of "Leicas" were made there...

How can we tell it ? Simply, give a look to some real Leicas (see our Wiki section, or many other sites, for example www.summilux.net)

I went to the site you recommended and under the antique section is a camera that is identical to one of mine. I'll wait and see what KEH says. I do not think they are fakes. But thanks for everything.

Don't waste the postage...

The cameras are not identical to yours.

Just one look at the script on the lens cap is sufficient. Then work your way backwards to the rear of the camera...

Sorry that we all bring you bad news.

The fakeness of the cameras scream out just by looking at the quality of the screws holding the stuff together: then go and look at some fine Leica engineering screws. Luftwaffe Leicas had "Luftwaffen Eigentum" engraved on the back, not the top of the camera. If you unscrew the lenses you will notice that the position sensor for the lens cam is not a roller, but a curved cam. Real Leicas use rollers. There is a major industry involved in manufacturing poor Leica fakes from Fed and Zorki copies of the Leica model D. It's like banking clerks: handle the real thing and the counterfeit stands out a mile.

look at the real Leica model D on (someone elses) link

David.

don't feel bad about having fake leicas... they might be useable... not worth much but who knows you might be able to get crisp pictures with dreamy bokeh.

Sorry dfp, but I also agree that the cameras are not Leicas. You have here the opinions of many expert Leica collectors. Some have worked for the company or their subsidiaries. I am only a recent additive to this forum, but have a great respect for their opinions. Actually, remembering you have a number of "soviet, etc." cameras, it appears you may have the start of a good eastern bloc collection. Especially, as you probably have the extra positive that you can use them.

Clearly fakes! Clean your glasses and look again to "identical" Leicas : screws, engravings, release button, ... And if you get the cap off, you'll also mention a triangular (instead of round) head on the rangefinder system arm. Sorry for you, but your father in law was a RUSSIAN (SOVIET) camera collector, not a Leica lover.

Hi

They are still nice cameras capable of good photos, and the FSU (former soviet union) camera people dont mind the 'embillishments', to much.

Try the 'RFF' forum for sales advice if you dont intend to cherish them..

A Fed or Zorki is nice condition does not get as much as a similar Leica but can still be e-bayed, the Lomo people refurb & recycle them. There are some that like the signature of the FSU lenses, especially on a digital M..

The easiest give away are the font of the top plate script, the range finder follower, and the position of the iris in the lens.

Thank you all for the input. KEH said even if they are fakes, they will buy them. I just want them gone and out of the way..lol My father in law wasn't a leica collector. That just happened to be 2 of the cameras. The rest are different name brands from Russia. I'm not worried if they are real or not. I am a camera dummie and I don't know what I'm looking at...lol I trust what you say. That's why I came to this site. Again, Thanks for everything...I'll let you know what I get for them...Donna

There are some rare Soviet cameras, but of course the odds of you having one are small. I'm surprised that KEH showed interest because I tried to sell them a Contax IIa color dial with ex+ sonnar and they "just said no". Maybe they thought I was trying to offload a Kiev. The way the FSU jokesters make fake nazi cameras is to remove the chrome off the FED or Zorki 2 cameras and then use cheap engraving devices. The fact that they look a bit distressed adds "authenticity" real wartime Leicas go for silly money

Also a point to note is...

These have square cornered viewfinder covers compared to a Leica.

Can someone confirm the two different shutter speed sequences are OK, one looks wrong to me.

John

# 244.361 Ought to be a Leica I, indeed ... and not with 1/25... (but could had been "upgraded") # 314.281 is, let' say, "right"... :o

Hi

314281 is a Zorki 1b or later ive forgotten the exact details - the threaded shutter release identifies it, normally with a Leica you unscrew the surround and thread on an adapter the release has no hole, or later Leicas you could thread the adapter with the surround in place, still no hole.

I'm not a early Leica person but Ive not seen one before with a finder window surround that is flush with the top plate.
