More meaningless anecdotal evidence about health of film...

Just replying to the title of this thread – “More meaningless anecdotal evidence about health of film...”, two, well, anecdotes from Switzerland:

  1. For the first time in over a year, I wasn’t able to pick up my developed films inside the usual 8-days-frame. My photo dealer subcontracts E-6 development, and his excuses why my slides weren’t ready after more than two full weeks was “They [the lab] have been swamped for a while already, but now one employee got sick, too!”.
  2. The Lomography dudes are looking for a “Region Manager” for Switzerland. Main tasks: Find a location for a lomography gallery store and build relations. As the store is supposed to open in Zurich, one of the most expensive cities in continental Europe, I find this quite relevant. Also, they’ve just released a brand-new 135 camera. Austrians often are ridiculed in German-speaking Europe, but they also (usually) know what they’re doing, business-wise.

My guess: Hipsters. Never underestimate a sub-culture going mainstream to save the day. Or, at least, a couple of days – this might be a short-lived trend. But photographic film hasn’t been as much in demand in Switzerland as since the late 90s. At least, from a consumer perspective, meaningless and anecdotal, that is.

Cheerio,

Silver Print referenced above have just told me they cant get Delta 400 in 100 foot reels any more.

Noel, I honestly can't imagine the demand is that huge for 100 foot reels of anything let alone Delta 400.

Hi Bill

Your

Photo imagination excellent

Inventry imagination less so

My fridge(s) are full reels of film little room for food, I only buy expired cassettes of film when they are being given away.

10%-15% of the group I hang around with use 5222(cine), APX400 and HP5 in bulk, some have gone to digital, remainder buy commercial cassettes.

Some use of cine remjet and bulk C41 as well 5%.

Silver print always have lots of bulk in their pigeon holes.

Noel
