I am so happy that I found you, I have some terrific news that will change your life and mine as a photographer!

They have come up with this fantastic new medium for image capture that will free us from our computers and give us back our lives! It's based on a chemical process that is so simple you can literally perform it in your bathroom!!! You can archive this stuff for years, without worry over degradation or outright loss of the data! And it is so simple to reproduce and enjoy--simply put it on a piece of paper, show it around to friends, family, clients etc then put it in a drawer, in your pocket, up on the wall or on the refrigerator!!!

It's called....

Anything needing that much hype to sell it has to be dodgy.

But are there any downsides if I try film, can I still get 400+ images on one, will I be able to make a colour image and B&W image at the same time, is there any way to avoid a false sense of superiority if I use film?

Umm ... how about wristwatches that don't need batteries anymore?

Self-winders have been around long before film. But I had to give mine up. I'm so lazy I could not keep it wound. ;)

But seriously, I was given a gold watch as a retirement gift. It's solar powered. There goes my night-life. And after not wearing a watch during my entire employment, it seemed strange to get one for retirement. Why should I care what time it is now? Besides, it gives only the date, month and day. I keep forgetting what year it is!

Film, bah. Glass plate is where it's at.

I wonder

- how many of the users younger than 30 had a chance to hold a fine photograph wet printed on baryta paper?

- when Leica or any other manufacturer would come up with a digital camera to turn out a gray scala with long and creamy gradations compared to what we obtain with the HP5+ or Tri-X developed in a soft working one?

- if people would ever learn that having the convenience of pressing the button of a camera as much as you wish would not necessarily mean of ending up with better disciplined eyes or better photographs than knowing you have limited frames to waste and you must expose the rest with care to achieve aesthetics.

Regards,

Bob

1, are you talking about digital there, or autofocus?

2, you could buy a Reporter, still probably lighter than a D700

3, I have seen plenty of brackets around to take two cameras with a common release system

4, False? We simply haven't fallen for the hype designed to keep CanNikon in business after they made the best film cameras they could do, and had to look around for new 'features'

:D:D:D:D all in fun of course, I even have a digital camera!

Ahh yes, the days of Agfa Record Rapid or Portriga. Fine papers, maybe never to be replicated at that level. But its no reason to wallow in nostalgia Bob.

When I used film I used film, and as many other photographer's did I used as much as I could. Nobody ever learned aesthetic sensibilities in a reasonable human lifetime by rationing the practice of photography through rationing film. There are cameras that would slow you down and the Zen like discipline of taking a 4x5 into the field with just two double darkslides is an experience that concentrates the mind. But concentrating the mind in that sense usually leads to safe judgements. But it seems to me the days of using a 35mm camera to experiment and be bold and shoot a lot of film have been overtaken by a similar sensibility to using a large format camera. Somehow or other the idea of rationing has come into play, maybe because its getting more expensive, maybe because there isn't enough honest discussion in film circles any more about the amount you need to shoot to get somewhere with whatever you have to say through photography. But either way, if you don't make one heck of a lot of photographs before you die you will never know how good you could be, and 'exposing with care' is one heck of a premature dead end.

Steve,

I do not believe that those filling their flickr.com sites with 10.000 pictures of anything appeared in their viewfinder knowing how good they could be than those trying to do the same with only hundreds of pictures in the same site however selected, exposed, processed and presented meticulously.

Through photography we teach ourselves a new visual code and notions of what is worth looking at. Some may start learning it after 1K clicks, some other may not seem promising even after 1M..

Regards,

Bob

(P.S. Loved your site..)

I know what you mean Bob, some people treat photography like visual diarrhea, and it is true you should edit what you show people!

My friend's son gave him an analogue retirement clock. There are only 7 markings on the face: "Saturday,""Saturday,""Saturday,""Saturday,""Saturday,""Saturday," "Sunday."

Peace,

Brent

Yeah man! Regret to confess that I bought the hype and succumbed to an acute GAS attack.

As of this week I'm the owner (hopefully happy) of an M3, a Rolleicord V and a Rollei 35 S, all CLAed and in good condition. All together they costed me less than half of what I paid two years ago for my 2nd hand mint M8...

Wish me good light!

Cheers,

Bruno
