Hi, I am trying to identify my Leica so that I may purchase an original instruction manual. I think it is a lf or llf. Can you help?

Also my leather camera case has a split back with a black plastic strip inside. What is this for and do all cases have this?

Where can I purchase the original manual?

I'm pretty sure you have a lllf, it will be either a 'black dial' or 'red dial' version (refers to the colour of the numbers engraved on the top plate around the shutter dial, for flash synchronisation.

Check the sticky threads for more info.

The flap in the case is just for keeping a tab from the film box as a reminder, or a note/card etc.

You can download a manual here Leica IF, IIF, IIIFinstruction manual, user manual, free PDF camera manuals

Thank you James, I think you are correct. What is the black plastic strip in the case slot? Is it for stiffness and all cases have it, or should I remove it to see what it is?

Also, the serial number on the camera body is 553,794. What year was it made?

Thanks again, Regards, Gkenny.

Hi John, Thanks for the response. Attached is a photo of the back edge of my Leica IIIf Camera Case. You will see a black plastic strip in the slotted back. I do not know if it is part of the case to stiffen it, or if it is something I can remove.

I am reluctant to take it out if it is supposed to be there because it seems hard to remove and I am afraid to damage it.

Have you seen this before?

Thanks again and Regards, Gkenny.

Hi again,

You have the link for the serial no's - also read the 'sticky' threads on this forum.

That's a part of the case, I think its basically to stiffen it. When I bought my lllf I found a card from (presumably, by the look of it) the first owner tucked into that pocket!

The case for my III (which is not a Leitz case, but a third party, english made version) has a similar slot oin the back, and came with a small folded exposure table in it. This is an official Leitz item, so no doubt most cases had them.

I also think it's main device was stiffening the back of the case to avoid that the press button pushed too hard on the camera and left traces there.

They let it open as a little wallet, so one could put reminders for the fiilm which was in the camera, or other useful things into it.

I found a little plastic card for flash synchronisation in there:

Wonder whether this little card had it's own five five letter word. What about PLASY?

Yes, the case's leather is divided and in the slit there is the dark plastic (?) thing to stabilize the rear side of the case. I wouldn't try to get this out, otherwise you run the risk of ruining the whole case.

I'm pretty sure it has a divider, presumably to put two things in.

Can't get at it at the moment, I don't use 'never ready' cases normally!
