Got myself a Modern Classic on 13 May - a 1983 Mercedes 500SL

It's a super cool looking fast car with a big V8 5 litre engine, with soft top and factory hard top. It combines classic styling with solid engineering meaning, although its now 28 years old, it still works very well. And for a classic car it's pretty economic - to buy, don't ask about the fuel costs. Most of all it looks great and is fab to drive. Here are a few pics of the car, and me, on my first proper day out with it.

German engineering at its best. Taken with Chrome Leica M8.2 and 28mm Summicron f2

Congratulations - a very fine car.

Mercedes-Benz built them like the infamous brick outhouse.Tough as boards, reliable, should last forever if well maintained and kept away from the winter. My 420SEL should see me out - because I maintain it quite well and I do not drive it in the winter.

These cars do not do not cause heavy breathing and blurry vision - but they are fun and as competent as anything ever built. Engineering at its best.

Wow! Very fine machine. It will surely turn many heads. You'll have to take it further afield than Syon Park (if I'm not mistaken, that seems to be the backdrop). Maybe perfect for burning down to Picinisco.

All the best, John

You are right on both counts John

That was Syon Park, second before an official parked a white van in front of the view and told me I could not take photos. Apparently, he said, people come and put classic cars there, take photos, then sell the cars in ebay claiming they are selling on behalf of the Duke of Norfolk etc. It was the best patter I have ever had from a jobsworth banning photos.

And I hope to drive the SL to Picinisco this summer!
