Hi everyone

I have owned a m8.2 for around 6 months already and I eqiup with a VC Nokton 35mm 1.4 , however I found it not wide enough for my street photography. I am thinking a Elmarit 28mm 2.8 pre-ASPH for a nice price, the summcron is a bit too expensive for me. Should I keep the nokton or go for the Elmarit ? My only concern is that does the Elmarit perform better than the nokton (bokeh and image quality) ? Since I have only 2 days to consider from the seller, so I'm confused... Please help and Thankyou very much

Welcome to the forum !!! As previously said, Elmarit 28 of the not-too-old versions are generally very good (I have one of 1982, for instance - excellent); BUT.... personally, as a 3 years user of M8... I have discovered 24 as an even more appreciable focal, also for the reason that it is the "full VF frame" of M8 and it is well differentiated from 35: problem, today, is that the Elmarit 24 asph is no more in production, and prices of the used are in the high side: but it's a fantastic lens, with just a bit of weight and size above the 28. Of course there are also the CV and Zeiss 25 that can be a good alternative.

Of course, if you are considering an EXCHANGE, having 24 or 25 as single focal can seem a bit "borderline" ... but I know people that use 24 on M8 for 90% of their time.

I have the last Elmarit 28 pre-asph that LCT mentions, and can confirm that it's an amazing lens - incredibly sharp and with a nice gentle out-of-focus rendering when the subject is close and the lens is wide open. There is the tiniest amount of cyan at the corners when shot on the M8 with the UV/IR filter attached - but this is so minimal that I usually don't feel the need to correct it.

I'd only disagree with LCT by saying that I almost wish I'd gone with an earlier version of the lens - the v4 is almost too sharp and 'modern'-looking for me. I've since seen images from the v3 that are softer and less 'precise' that would've suited my style better. But in short, all of the 28s are amazing lenses, and well worth owning.

Try to keep hold of your Nokton if you can afford to - I haven't regretted any of my lens purchases, but I've bitterly regretted the lenses I've sold.

The 28 Elmarit will most certainly outperform the Nokton in most regards -- sharpness, bokeh, colour rendition, contrast, geometry. It's also a nice focal lenght on the M8, equal to 37mm, an the 28mm framelines are easily seen (preferable imho over the 24mm framelines).

The big question is, can you live without the extra two stops of speed from the Nokton?

thankyou very much !!!

THis is really nice to join such a warm place as a leica member...haha

I think i definately could sacrifices the two stop to go for the legendary leica lens...I might not sell my nokton for its high speed yet. But I will definately go for the elmarit 28mm !!!!

thanks again guys!!!!
