Can someone tell me the BEST one of these cameras for second camera for weddings and walk around for vacation. The X1, D-Lux5 or V-Lux . I will be using a flash on camera and would like a moderate zoom.

( say 35-105) I cant see paying a LOT of Money for the X1. Image quality is my # 1 concern. I do NOT need features. Thank you, rollsman

To be honest my overall impression is it’s hitNmiss..some images are good, some iffy..

I would imagine the Pany version using RAW might be acceptable & more cost effective.

I personally do not like the super zooms...

Do not buy a camera for looks’’ ;)

My D300’s are backed up with D3000’s..

The Nikon batteries last forever..Images are pretty hot.

There are as many views on the "back up" camera as there are stars in the sky..

I use Leica & Nikon (film&digital) and have done for as long as I can remember.

As I cannot Post a non Leica images here, it’s up to you........:)

Rollsman -

Forget about the lovely little X1 since you want a zoom lens and it has none. Regarding the V-Lux 2 or the DL5 I suggest handling them both to see which seems to better meet your needs.

I'm surprised you've had short battery life with your Digilux 2. I find I can use mine for a huge number of exposures before either changing batteries or recharging.

I used to have a digilux 2 but the battery life was terrible. The images were good.

The trick is to never switch off the camera. It uses a stepper motor to determine the position of the rings on the lens for aperture etc. every time it boots. If you just let it hibernate the camera remembers the last positions and it saves you significant battery time.

Any of those would be my 3rd back up..

Think about a DL4, it has a zoom and a respectable lens...

I'm a little confused by your comment. The OP has mentioned the D-Lux 5 and you've suggested the D-Lux 4 because of its zoom and lens. They have essentially the same lens but the D-Lux 5 extends to 90 mm compared to the D-Lux 4's 60 mm.:o

OK, how is the D LUX 4 or 5 for image quality? Or I was going to go with a canon 40 or 50D. Almost the same price. I was leaning towards a leica for my use due to its beautiful images( so different from the other brands) Any ideas? Thanks

Presumably you are a Pro.

If you use a Canon 5D as your primary camera, I don't think that you would be satisfied with a D-Lux 4 as a back-up to be honest. And I would also question whether your clients would be either.

Why not buy a second Canon body?

I had the impression that the Poster” was looking for a “cost effective” back up.. The DL4

admittedly has a shorter zoom but it is still a great pocket rocket camera..

If he is a Pro he will have already decided his parameters. As nearly all the recommendations to him are countered with But’s & what about”’ I doubt that anything put forward will be acceptable. If he is a look at me “I have a Canon XXA1” -- then who knows what he is really looking for. The Leica choices are few within his parameters, the actual market place is full of great cameras..I say this with the greatest of respect..:)

If you are a professional wedding photographer, only the X1 would give you the quality you need as back-up. Even that is really a third back-up. If your livelihood depends on success with your weddings, it is unwise to compromise on quality. Buy a second body compatible with your prime kit.

For supplementary anecdotal pictures at a wedding, the X1 possibly has a role and is less intimidating than a DSLR. But for core coverage, do not compromise.

If you can not maintain the same quality with a spare camera, it is not a spare.

Does this questionable logic apply to spare wheels too?

Would a Leica S2 owner expect to keep a second S2 as a spare ... ?
